Oceanic Time - Crafting an Epoxy Clock With Seashells and Waves

Inspired by the beauty of the ocean, this epoxy clock project brings the tranquility of the sea into your home. Using seashells, sand, and layered epoxy resin, I created a unique clock that mimics the appearance of ocean waves lapping at the shore. The base is formed by embedding natural elements like sand and seashells in epoxy, followed by a gradient of blue and white epoxy to simulate the ocean. To complete the design, I cast seashells and starfishes in silicone molds, adding intricate details. This DIY project not only showcases creativity but also serves as a functional, artistic timepiece for your living space.

Materials

1. Seashells (big)
2. Epoxy
3. Epoxy Pigments
4. Sand
5. Seashell molds (optional)/ original seashells (small)
6. Grass fiber

1. Select large seashells. Ensure they are clean and free of any clay or debris.
2. Select seashells that are relatively thin and easy to crush. Thicker, harder shells might take more effort to break down.
3. Use a hammer to gently tap the seashells, breaking them into smaller pieces. Continue until they are broken into coarse fragments.

1. Mix the broken shells with sand 1:1 cup
2. Mix 1 cup of epoxy resin and give it a good mix.

1. Pour the mixture on a clean base, preferable on a plastic sheet.
2. Give a desired shape. Add some more seashells to mimic the shoreline. Imagination has no limit.
3. Let it dry for the next 24 hours.

1. Add blue resin to create the ocean waters.
2. Let the blue layer dry.
3. Add white resin near the shores to create the waves.
4. Use air blower to spread the white epoxy to create natural wave effects.
5. Let it dry again.

1. Add a clear epoxy coat as the final touch.
2. Add some grass fibers on the higher places on the ocean to create the islands.

Here we didn't have smaller shell of different kinds, we had silicone mold at home. So we added white epoxy and casted some shells. This step was done beforehand.

1. Few of these shells was added to the shore.
2. Filled some white sand on the shores.
3. Let it dry for the final time.

1. After the base structure was ready and hard, it was time to drill the pocket for clock's machine from behind.
2. To get the clock-hands at the right place, a hole was made from the front. The base was then turned.
3. The place for the clock-machine was then marked by keeping the hole in the center.

1. The place for the clock-machine was drilled and the machine was snug-fitted.
2. The hands were then fixed from the front.
3. A small hole was drilled from the back-top to make it hang.
