Organizer From Paper Cup and Yarn
Hello everyone.
In this Instructable I'll be showing you how to make a pretty, yarn-decorated organizer made using an art known as cup-weaving. Now in this Instructable I wanted to do something a bit unique, so I decided to try weaving multiple cups together instead of weaving just the one. Through endless trial-and-error of experimenting with different patterns and a varying number of cups, I finally perfected a simple two-cup design, with four total compartments. So without further ado, let's begin!
Supplies
> 2 Paper cups
> Yarn (As many colors as you want)
> Scissors
Cut Slits on Opposite Sides of the Two Cups
Cut two long slits as shown, one on each side of the cup. Do this for both cups, and make sure to leave a small gap before reaching the bottom. This is to prevent the yarn from slipping off the bottom of the cup.
Stabilize the Cups
Now you'll need to stabilize the cups, otherwise they'll be bucking and swaying while you're trying to weave, and basically making a mess of the whole thing. I've stabilized them by pinning them to the top of a cardboard box.
Start Weaving
First you're going to make a simple knot on the end of the yarn. Then slip it inside the slit of Cup One (right-hand side). Next take the yarn all around Cup One in a full circle, then run it back through the slit to the inside of the cup. Now take it through the two slits connecting Cup One and Cup Two (left-hand side), all the way through to the outside slit on Cup Two.
Now repeat the process on this side. Take the yarn around Cup Two once, then back inside and through to Cup One.
And that's your whole pattern. Just repeat this over and over again until your cups are completely covered.
Changing Colors
Changing from one color to the next is very simple. Just tie your new color onto the end of the one you were just using, and snip off the excess ends. Then continue weaving as before.
Finishing Up
Tie off the end of the yarn to the top strand and snip off the bit left over.
And now you're done!
