I recently bought a used ps3 controller from ebay, it looks in good condition appart from the fault. I have another PS3 controller but its never had this problem but looks quite different on the inside too.

It will just press random buttons, so I thought i need to open it up and see whats going on inside.

Supplies

Screwdriver

Padding of some sort

Scissors

Seeing how the buttons connect to the board I knew it was the problem. In the picture I have highlighted to two sides of the connection and then the thin black padding behind it.

This happens because the padding behind the connection sinks into the frame holding it in place, so over time the connection has less and less pressure on it.

I started by cleaning the connection with isopropyl alcohol then I cut out a small piece of rubber foam to keep pressure on the connection.

With the new white rubber foam cut I placed it between the white plastic frame and the old black pad thats is stuck to the flex connection. Put everything back into place and screwed the controller back together.

Its worked perfectly for me since, if this happens again I think I will add a solid plastic back to prevent the padding from sinking into the grid like case.
