Paint MDF

Painting MDF isn't always as easy as it looks. It has the tendency to absorb all the paint and leave an uneven surface.

Materials and tools needed

• MDF
• Wood glue
• Primer
• Sanding paper in different grit numbers
• Sanding block
• Paint in a color of your choice

We recommend using latex gloves in order to prevent oil and dirt getting from your hands on the surface of the object you're painting.

Apply a thin, even layer of wood glue to seal the pores of the MDF.

Always use a sanding block!

You can buy them or just make one yourself. The only requirement is that you have a flat, sturdy surface.

Fold the sanding paper around the sanding block and sand in circular motions.

Start with a low grit number. The rule of thumb is to double the grit number until you have a smooth, even surface.

First, remove the dust caused by sanding. Then apply a thin layer of primer in even strokes.

If you need multiple layers of primer, sand in between with a high grit number.

Use a high grit number to sand your object again. You don't want to remove the primer, just prepare the surface for painting.

The last step is to apply paint in a color of your choice. Apply 2-3 thin layers.
