Paper Mache - Fleur De Lis
Paper mache items are a fun project. Your creativity is the limit of what can be created. This project was completed in 1 afternoon.
Supplies
The basic supplies for any paper mache project are
- thin strips of newspaper
- paste. The paste is made from
- 1 part flour
- 1.5 part water
For this fleur de lis you will also need:
- 1 inch insulation foam
- Permanent marker
- a sharp utility knife
- Paint & brushes
- Modge-Podge - I like the semi gloss
Optional:
- Super-fine sand paper
- Disposable gloves
Create Your Design
Using a permanent marker, trace you design on to the 1 inch insulation foam. You can print & cut a template to make it easier.
Cut Out Your Design
Using the utility knife, carefully cut your design out of the 1 inch foam. Don't worry about being exact.
Shape the Foam
Using the utility knife, shape the foam to give it curved edges. You can use the sand paper to gently smooth curved edges.
Make Your Paste
Begin by making your paste. I've found that a leak-proof container works best. Add the water and flour to the container, seal, and shake until mixed. If there are lumps, re-seal and continue to shake.
Recipe:
- 1 part flour
- 1.5 part water
Apply the Paper Strips
This is where the disposable gloves come in handy.
Dip a strip of news paper in the paste and wipe off any excess paste.
Apply the paper to the foam.
I usually start with the curved edges and corners and work in to the larger flat areas. Be sure to wrap the paper around the back. Thinner strips of paper used on the curved edges will result in a smoother finished project.
The paste usually tries fairly quickly if it is not applied too thick.
Cover the Entire Shape
Continue to apply strips of pasted paper until the entire shape is covered. Don't forget to do the back too.
Apply a Base Coat of Paint
After the paper mache has dried, paint the entire shape. (front and back)
When the paint is dry, you can lightly sand the shape to reduce any stray pieces of paper. Re-paint the sanded areas. It will not be 100% smooth.
Paint the Paper Mache
This is the fun part. Paint the dried shape to give it a burst of color.
Seal the Paint
After the paint has dried, use the Modge-Podge to coat the entire painted area.
This will both protect the paint from scratches, but will give it a nice shine.
Let Dry
When the Modge-Podge is dry your project is finished.
Enjoy!
