Paper Only Bin Filter

When I was at school I found lots of rubbish and non-recyclable materials in the recycling bin. This really annoyed me so I wanted to create a cover for the bin that would only allow in paper. This would prevent batches of rubbish that were going to be recycled from being thrown away, and even if it the batches were going to be sorted, it would save energy because it would no longer have to be sorted.

Supplies

Tools:

  • Craft knife
  • Glue (preferably fast action)

Supplies:

  • Cardboard

Designing

First I made a quick design in Fusion 360. This allows me to make sure all dimensions are accurate and prevents waste. I did this by sketching out the side profile and copying it across and then I extruded the sides to fill in the gap between them.

Cutting Out Parts

I then cut out all the parts I would need for this project. I did this using a craft knife to make sure none of the edges were rough to make the gluing easier.

Gluing

I then glued all the pieces together one at a time to create the letterbox like contraption. I used several items such as tape holders to make it easier so I wouldn't have to stand there the whole time.

Testing

Finally, I tested it on a bin and it worked really well! It didn't fall down at all and it was quick and easy to get the paper in, even while nothing else could. I hope this concept could be used around schools to help the environment and reduce any unnecessary waste.
