Parameter(n): a numerical or other measurable factor forming one of a set that defines a system or sets the conditions of its operation.

I wondered a little about the meaning of Parametric Design, and I found this answer very helpful.

Generally speaking, the variables of my construction kit designs can be:

  • Thickness
  • Clearance

Parametric design is a design approach that uses parameters or rules to generate and manipulate complex geometric forms. In parametric design, the relationships between elements are defined by mathematical equations or algorithms, allowing for the creation of designs that can be easily modified by adjusting these parameters. This approach enables designers to explore a wide range of design possibilities and variations efficiently.

Some examples of parametric design include:

  1. Architecture: Parametric design is commonly used in architecture to create intricate structures and facades. Architects use parametric modeling software to generate complex forms based on specific parameters such as site conditions, environmental factors, and structural requirements. The Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku, Azerbaijan, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, is a notable example of a building created using parametric design principles.
  2. Product Design: Parametric design is also used in product design to create customized and unique products. Companies like Nike have used parametric design to develop innovative shoe designs that are tailored to individual athletes' needs and preferences.
  3. Urban Planning: Parametric design is increasingly being used in urban planning to analyze and optimize urban spaces. By using parametric modeling tools, urban planners can simulate different scenarios and test the impact of various design decisions on factors such as traffic flow, pedestrian accessibility, and environmental sustainability.
  4. Art and Sculpture: Many artists and sculptors use parametric design techniques to create intricate and organic forms that would be difficult to achieve using traditional methods. Artists like Anish Kapoor and Olafur Eliasson have produced stunning works of art using parametric design principles.
  5. Fashion Design: Parametric design is also making its way into the world of fashion design. Designers are using parametric modeling software to create avant-garde clothing designs that push the boundaries of traditional fashion.

Overall, parametric design offers designers a powerful tool to explore complex geometries and optimize designs based on specific criteria, leading to innovative and highly customized solutions in various fields.

Tools:

  • Laser cutting machine
  • a wood sheet (3mm - 6mm)

Software:

  • Fusion 360 (for 3D design)
  • Coral Draw or Laser Works (for laser cutting machine)

I built a Fusion360 sketch and defined my parameters as follows:

  • I started to make parameters to my design
  • Then I start to Draw my Basic Shape (I Will call It SIP)
  • Then I start to make the Stick
  • After I finished the design I Export the file as a DXF to put it in the Laser Cutting Machine

I prepared the file I want to cut on Laser Works or Coral Draw

Then I Put the Files Into the LASER Cutter

For our Laser Cutter, The Power of the Laser was 60 watt

So The Speed and Power I will choose depend on the Power of the tube of the laser

For PlyWood 3mm :

Cutting : Speed (25mm/s)---Power (Min:65%---Max:65%)

For PlyWood 6mm :

Cutting : Speed (15mm/s)---Power (Min:75%---Max:75%)

Engraving : Speed (300mm/s)---Power (Min:30%---Max:30%)
