Periodic Table Cake

A quick and easy guide to making a quick and easy periodic table cake.

Just for info.....

I'm a chemistry teacher in the UK and wanted some way to say "bye" to my A-Level classes at the end of the year.

Battenberg cake (1 sliced thin for elements up to Kr, 2 or 3 for a more complete table and 4 or 5 for the Lanthanides and Actinides)

Coloured Icing (Available from most supermarkets - 3 colours ideally)

Sharp knife

Periodic table (for reference)

It is best to work out the size of the cake (and number of elements) you want at the beginning and cut the cake slices accordingly.

Assemble the cake in a rough shape of the periodic table. (space permitting)

This is the most time consuming step (and most difficult)

Using the periodic table as a reference, carefully ice the elements onto the squares of the Battenburg cake. (it is worth practicing a couple first on any spare pieces)

Once you have completed the icing, tidy up the arrangement and you are done. :-)

A large Tupperware container can be used to transport if needed.
