Phone Lock by Erbin Abarado
While browsing Amazon I happened to find a lock that was not unlocked by key, but by a timer. This gave me the idea of a phone lock for my SIDE Project in Ms. Berbawy's Principles of Engineering class.
To start, I purchased several different phone mounts, took the design elements I liked, and recreated them in TinkerCAD. I then printed my designs using a Lulzbot TAZ 6 and assembled them. I printed and tested out several different designs to see what would work best for my application.
This project is important to me because I honestly have an addiction to my phone and it's a detriment to my grades and well being. I have access to many Maker resources in Ms. Berbawy's classroom and was interested in finding ways to use the 3D printer to make my own stuff. The process took a lot of testing and adapting of the design to fit my needs. Through this project I was able to develop better TinkerCAD skills and learned more about 3D Printers.
Materials and Tools
For this Project I used:
Lulzbot Mini 3D Printer
PLA 3D Filament
NinjaFlex 3D Filament
M3 Hex Nuts
M3 20mm Bolts
Spring: 23/64" x 1-3/8"
Gorilla Super Glue Gel
Velcro
Other Useful Materials:
Engineering Notebook
Pens/Pencils
Dremel
Design
Image 1 is the part that holds the spring. You should be able to cut the spring with wire cutters for the desired length.
The part in image 2 goes above the spring and is connected to the purple part in image 3 on the side that has the open space.
The fourth picture is what holds everything together and is attached to the part in image 1 by nuts and bolts.
The last picture is of all the parts, the big yellow structure is image 1 with holes for the bolts and has wings added to cover my phone screen.

Print Part 1-4
Settings for the print are above. It is a relatively simple print, but always make sure that the first layer is printed correctly.
This process should take about 3 hours as it does not need to be perfect or very precise
Screen Protector
When put together I noticed that the bolts were cracking my screen. Thankfully I had a screen protector, but for this lock, I need to prevent the metal bolts from even touching the screen.
So I designed a model that is taller than the head of the bolt, but has holes so that the heads can go through. I also thought it should be printed in ninja flex because the rubbery squishy material is better for the screen than the brittle plastic.

Printing Screen Protector (Part 5)
Ninja Flex is a different type of filament requiring different print settings (above), but it is need to print out the screen protector. As always make sure that the 3D printer prints the first layer before moving on with your day.
Assembly
Now put the spring where it needs to be and put together parts 1-4 and connect them with the hex screws and bolts.
Now that the main body is attached, use Gorilla Super Glue Gel to stick pieces of Velcro to Part 5 and Part 2. This way, the screen protector is removable whenever you don't need it.
Now to actually lock it. The holes found on parts 2 and 4, you stick the time lock's metal wire through the holes and tighten. Set the time and the arms are now holding the phone (see pictures above).

Congratulations! Your Phone Lock is now complete and go on to studying in peace!
Credits
Without the help of many people, this project would not even be within my grasp. A big thank you to Ms. Berbawy for providing me with all the resources I could possibly need, and as well as my classmate Sven, the tech genius who was always there if I needed help with anything.
Most of all, thank you viewer for graciously looking at my project and using your time.
