Photopea Tutorial: Bringing Out a Subject

In this tutorial, I will be demonstrating a method of bringing out a subject in any photo, much like a vignette.

Supplies

Computer

Web browser

Open Image

If you are editing an image and would like to keep the resolution it is currently at, open it from your computer. If you want to set a custom resolution, select "New Project" and set your resolution. I will be using the resolution of the original image (4608 x 3456).

Adjust Brightness/Contrast

Before you make your selection, be sure to adjust the brightness and contrast as needed. This will mainly apply to your subject, so keep that in mind. Brightness/Contrast is located under the Image tab in Adjustments.

Touch Up (Before Selection)

Use the spot healing brush tool to rid of small imperfections or things that you do not want in your final product. (See left side of image)

Make Your Selection

Since there are some contrasting colors and lots of small details around the truck, I used the magic wand selection tool. I recommend keeping the tolerance between 50-75 and using shift+click to expand your selection. If you would like to manually make the selection, use the lasso tool.

Inverse Selection

Right click and select "Inverse". This will change the selection from your subject to your background, allowing for changes to it and it only.

Add a Filter

Select the "Filter" tab at the top of your screen. I personally like using blurs as it is a good way to direct focus in an image. (Note: This step as well as the next 2 steps can be done in any order, although I would recommend saving brightness adjustments for last.)

Adjust Vibrance

Select the Filter tab once again and find "Vibrance" under the Adjustments tab. I recommend using values below 0 as it furthers the focus to your subject.

Adjust Brightness/Contrast

Before making the final touches on your image, be sure to adjust the brightness/contrast once more. I lowered the brightness to bring out the subject even more, but left the contrast as is.

Make Final Adjustments/Touches

Holding down alt and scrolling will allow you to zoom in and out. I zoomed in and used the spot healing brush tool once more to remove small imperfections from around the body of the truck (mainly pieces of the plant that were slightly included by the selection tool.)

Finished!

Find the "File" tab and select "Export As". For this instance, use either the PNG or JPG format.
