Plastic Yarn Out of Plastic Bags

One thing in my house that keeps multiplying is grocery store plastic bags.

I really don't like using plastic bags and have been starting to try to use reusable bags for the grocery store, but somehow plastic bags still find their way into my house.

So instead of fighting it I decided to create something out of the plastic and found a great technique to make yarn out of the plastic bags.

Supplies

This is what I used to create plastic yarn

Plastic Bags

Scissors

Lay Bag Flat

I started laying the bag flat on my work surface. Since they have been crinkled up for a long time the bags had to be both unwrinkled and laid flat.

Cut Off Bottom

The next step was to cut off the bottom of the bag. This is an unused part of the yarn.

Cut Bag Into Strips

My next step was to cut the plastic bag horizontally into 2" strips.

Each bag could produce about 4 lengths of 2" strips

Once the strips are cut, you can also get rid of the top of the bag.

Link Strips Together

The next step is to link all the strips together. This is done effectively by weaving one piece around the other link and then through itself.

Keep going until you have one long string of plastic strips

Prepare for Use

Wind all the plastic yarn in a ball so it is ready for use.

Plastic yarn can create a lot of cool things including plastic mats and rugs!

Enjoy!
