Play With 3D Printer

Nowadays 3D printers is the major role for everyday life. It helps us to do lot of creative projects and even we can use it for our house holders like paste stand, door lock, toys for kids etc..

Do you Know 3D printer not only giving life to objects and It also give life to our image. If you have a picture of it then you can turn it into a 3D model and 3D print it.

you can enjoy by using 3D printer.

Carving:

Carving is a subtractive process where we get the shape by removing materials.

we can 3D print from a picture, the 3D prints from pictures is called 'LITHOPHANE' and the technique is called 'LITHOGRAPHY', you can 3D print from any image of our choice.

Video Demonstration

Select a Good Image

Choose a Image that would be suitable for 3D printing. Images should be a good clarity when 3D printed.

It is best to choose a picture with a fairly high contract ratio.

In this Instructable I have chosen four images as a demo. Using this Images I have planned to do some creative arrangements. Let's see all these things step by step.

Overview of Ultimaker Cura

To Create the 3D model from the picture, we are going to use Ultimaker Cura.

Ultimaker Cura is an open source software, and it is free of charge. It is used to slice 3d model and general G-Code, then G-Code will be sent o the 3d printer for manufacturing physical objects.

This software is compatible with most desktop 3d printers.

It supports many format files: OBJ, STL, X3D, 3MF, etc.....

It supports a wide range of firmware, such as Repetier, Marlin, Mach3, Makerbot and Griffin. Cura supports dual extrudes.

Create a 3D Model Using Ultimaker Cura

Now Open a Ultimaker Cura software. From left side Open icon is there. Click it once. It shows the images which we are already stored in the particular location.

The easiest one of course is to use Ultimaker Cura since we may already be used to it. Ultimaker Cura supports importing images and conversion into 3D meshes.

It's quite simple, drag and drop or select Load Model from Ultimaker Cura's menu then select a jpg image instead of an stl file.

Import Your Image

Select the image from the particular location and click okay. It will load the image and display in the main window, we will then be able to adjust the various settings of the image, such as Contrast, Brightness and Gamma.

Set the 3D Image Setting From Ultimaker Cura

A Small Windows will appear in the main page. We have to set the dimensions based on the requirement,

Width (mm): (80 mm )is the width of the 3D Image, it will be tied to the Height parameter so the aspect ratio is always kept.

Height (mm): (0.8mm) the the height of the 3D image, it will be tied to the Width parameter so the aspect ratio is always kept

Depth (mm): (80mm)depth of the 3D image .

color Model : Linear

Change the Printer Settings

It will load the image and display in the main window.

I used the following settings in the Creality Ender 3D printer.
Printer Nozzle Size: 1mm

Supports: enabled

Retraction distance: 10 mm

Retraction retract speed: 60 mm/sec

Prime speed: 30 mm/sec

Z hop when retracted: enabled

Max Z speed: 120 mm/s

Z hop height: 1 mm

Travel speed: 200 mm/s Layer

height: 0.15 mm

Print temp initial layer: 200 Temperatures

Print Bed Temperature: 60 Temperatures Main

Printing Temperature: 180 Temperature (degrees) for main print

TempOverhang: 30 degrees

Brim: enabled

support Pattern: Grid

Support Placement: Touching build Plate

Support Overhanging angle: 45

All the other settings: default

Material: PLA

Infill Density: 10

Initial Layer height: 0.2

Slicing the 3D Image and Generate the Gcode

From the Right corner of the main window there is slice option .Its shows many hours it will take to print and save the file as gcode into SD Card. Then Insert the SD card into the 3D printer. Now its starts to print.

Physical Building : Incandescent Light Setup

Connect the DC adapter module with Incandescent Bulb Holder.

Long Terminal of the DC adapter Leg is connected to the Positive terminal of the Incandescent bulb holder.

Short Terminal of the DC adapter Leg is connected to the Negative terminal of the Incandescent bulb holder.

3D Design : Photo Box

This is a Triangular box which we have to keep the frame at the three sides.

Incandescent Bulb Attachment

In the Traingular box, there is a hole which is used to insert the Incandescent bulb into it.

Carving Our Images

The images which we are carved using 3D printer.

Fix a Image in the Top of the Triangular Box.

Place the carved Images at the top side of the Photo Box using fevikwik

Fix a Image in the Right Side of the Triangular Box.

Place the second carved Images at the right side of the Photo Box using fevikwik

Fix a Image in the Left Side of the Triangular Box.

Place the second carved Images at the right side of the Photo Box using fevikwik.

Ultimaker Cura

Export each component as an STL file, and send them to the Ultimaker Cura 3D printing software.

I used the following settings in the Creality Ender 3D printer.

Printer Nozzle Size: 1mm

Supports: enabled

Retraction distance: 10 mm

Retraction retract speed: 60 mm/sec

Prime speed: 30 mm/sec

Z hop when retracted: enabled

Max Z speed: 120 mm/s

Z hop height: 1 mm Travel

speed: 200 mm/s Layer

height: 0.15 mm Print temp

initial layer: 200 Temperatures

Print Bed Temperature: 60 Temperatures

Main Printing Temperature: 180 Temperature (degrees) for the main print

TempOverhang: 30 degrees

Brim: enabled

support Pattern: Grid

Support Placement: Touching build Plate Support

Overhanging angle: 45

All the other settings: default

Material: PLA

Infill Density: 10

Initial Layer height: 0.2
