Pokémon Go Cake!
Which team are you on? Does anyone have all the legendary Pokemon? Have you ended up in strange places? Who wants a Pokemon Go birthday cake? If you answered yes to these questions it's highly likely you are addicted!! ;)
Tell me everything you know in the comment section below...I want to hear all about it!
After you tell me fabulous things about Pokemon Go, check out how I made this awesome cake!!
Fondant Pokemon
This instructable is going to show you the simple steps of how to make fondant Pokemon Go decorations but not the cake construction itself. We will start with an already tiered fondant covered cake. Bottom tier (8 inch) is covered in a dark blue fondant and the top tier (6 inch) is covered in a mint green color.
Let's get started with the Pokemon! For this cake request I made Pikachu, Charmander, Squirtle, & Bulbasaur.
First draw out all the Pokemon on paper and cut them out to create patterns. The following instructions will highlight the steps for Pikachu and Charmander. You will quickly get the idea of how to assemble the pieces and will be able to move on to the other Pokemon without direction! Photos are provided.
Pikachu-
- To make Pikachu you will need yellow, red, white, and black fondant. If you haven't worked with fondant before it doesn't take much to create a flat character.
- Using a rolling pin, roll out a piece of yellow fondant very thin (about 1/16 of an inch) and place the pattern on the fondant. Let the fondant harden slightly before cutting. This will make it easier to cut and the lines will come out cleaner. If you try to cut fondant right after rolling sometimes it will stick to your knife. No bueno!
- Using a sharp knife cut around the pattern. Remove excess fondant and set aside.
- Roll out a small piece of black fondant and cut out two small circles (I used a round piping tip to cut my circles).
- Elongate them slightly and adhere them where the eyes should be using clear vanilla extract or vodka and a small food safe paint brush.
- Roll out a small piece of white fondant and cut two circles smaller than the eyes. Adhere them on the black circles to complete the eyes.
- Roll out a small piece of red fondant and cut two small circles (same size as the black circles).
- Elongate them slightly and adhere them where the cheeks should be.
- In a small prep bowl mix a small amount of black food coloring (smaller than the size of a pea) with two or three drops of clear vanilla extract or vodka. Mix well.
- Using a very small/thin food safe paintbrush paint the outlines, borders, and face of Pikachu.
- Set aside to harden. If I know it's going to be a while before I am ready to assemble the cake I like to place flat decorations on something with a slight curve. This will allow the pieces to form to the cake later. If they harden on a flat surface you will not be able to form them. If you try to bend them they will most likely crack or break.
Charmander-
- To make Charmander you will need copper, light yellow, dark yellow, white, red, blue, and black fondant.
- Using a rolling pin, roll out a piece of copper fondant very thin (about 1/16 of an inch) and place the pattern on the fondant.
- Using a sharp knife cut around the pattern. Do not remove excess fondant yet.
- Cut the pattern again for the arm, tail, eyes, and belly.
- Using excess copper fondant cut out the arm pattern. Remove excess fondant and set aside.
- Roll out a small piece of light yellow fondant and using the belly pattern cut out the belly shape.
- Adhere the belly with clear vanilla extract or vodka and then adhere the arm so it overlaps the belly.
- Roll out a small piece of white fondant and cut around the eyes pattern. These are very small pieces so make sure your fondant has had a chance to harden slightly. It will make cutting small pieces so much easier!
- Continue rolling appropriate colors for necessary pieces and continue to adhere them with extract or vodka.
- Using a very small/thin food safe paintbrush paint the outlines, borders, insides of eyes, and the face of Charmander. If your food coloring mixture starts to dry up just add a few more drops of extract or vodka.
- Set aside to harden. Remember, if you have a slightly curved surface to let the character dry it will be best. If you can't find anything and you know where you want the character placed on the cake go ahead and place the character immediately after completion.
- Repeat this process with the remaining characters.
Pokemon Go Fondant Map
I wanted to incorporate the all important Pokemon Go map on this cake since following the map to find Pokemon is what the game is all about!
You will need yellow, medium blue, green and light blue to create the map pieces.
- Roll out the yellow and medium blue fondant separately and very thin.
- Cut 1/2 inch strips of medium blue fondant and place one strip at a time on the yellow fondant leaving about a 1/8 inch border one side. Cut the other side leaving a 1/8 inch boarder. This is a road!
- Adhere it to the top tier of the cake using extract or vodka.
- Make as many roads as you wish! To join two pieces of road you will need to cut the yellow fondant shorter than the top medium blue layer by about 1/8 of an inch. (see photos)
- Once you have all the roads in place how you would like them add some other elements. On Pokemon Go maps there are mainly water features, parks, houses, and buildings.
- Roll out the light blue fondant and cut into 1/2 inch strips. Cut into squares or rectangles and place along side the roads.
- Roll out green fondant and cut park shapes as you desire. Adhere to the 'map'.
Team Instinct Logo/Icon
Team Instinct was the team of choice for this cake request.
Use the same process to create the team icon as you did the characters only cut out two fondant background pieces instead of one.
Lay one of the back pieces out and press two wooden skewers or thin dowels into the fondant (see photo). Cover with extract and place the second background piece on top.
Layer on the Team Instinct icon using the same process as the Pokemon.
Pokemon Go Plus
You will need black, white and red fondant to make a 3 inch Pokemon Go Plus symbol for an accent piece on the map. I free-handed the shape for this step, however, you could draw out a pattern to make it easier.
- Roll out each color of fondant separately making sure the black fondant is at least 3.5 inches x 3.5 inches.
- Cut out a 2 inch circle of red fondant. Cut the circle in half and adhere it to the black fondant with extract.
- Cut out the other half of the upside down teardrop shape. Adhere it below the red fondant leaving a 1/8 inch gap with black showing through.
- Cut the black fondant leaving a border around the symbol.
- Set aside to harden.
Fondant Pokemon Go Logo
In order to create the Pokemon Go logo you will need red, black, white and dark blue fondant (same color as the bottom tier of the cake).
- Roll out separately the white, black and dark blue fondant. Luckily 'GO' is a short word because these letters are detailed!
- Cut out two, 1.5 inch circles of dark blue fondant. Cut out a letter 'G' from one circle. Cut a smaller circle out of the center of the other blue circle creating an 'O'.
- Cut out two slightly larger white circles and adhere the letters to the white circles.
- Cut out two even slightly large black circle and adhere to the back of the letter circles.
- Fill in the center of the 'O' with a Pokeball by cutting out one red circle and one white circle. Cut each circle in half and place in the middle of the 'O' with the red half on top.
- Cut a small circle of white fondant and black fondant and press the white circle on top of the black circle as to make a border of black around the white. Adhere to the center of the Pokeball.
- Roll out a very thin snake of white fondant. Cut these to fit across the letters creating the horizon.
- Poke small holes (to mimic the stars) in the top half of each letter.
- Roll out two, 3/4 inch balls of excess fondant of any color. Flatten the balls to about 1/8 inch thick. Place a toothpick in the fondant, coat it with a layer of vanilla extract and gently press the 'G' on top of the toothpick.
- Repeat with the 'O'. Set aside to dry and harden.
3D Fondant Poke Stops
I wanted a bit of height on the cake besides the Team Instinct bird so I make a few simple Poke Stops.
You will need light blue fondant for this step along with toothpicks.
- Cover half of a toothpick with fondant by rolling the fondant around the toothpick (in one direction only) until it sticks.
- Cut out a cube shape of fondant.
- Cut out a thick square shape of fondant.
- Stick the toothpick clear through the center of the thick square.
- Stick the cube through the toothpick on top of the square shape making sure it doesn't go clear through.
- Set aside until assembly.
Pokemon Go Cake Assembly
Here is the fun part and where creative freedom comes into play. All of the pieces are finished and can be put on the cake in any arrangement.
- I added a border to the bottom of my bottom tier by rolling a long piece of white fondant (25ish inches) and cutting it into a 1/2 inch strip. I adhered it with vanilla extract. The idea behind the border was to add height to the Pokemon. I thought they were slightly too small/short and wanted to raise them up slightly on the tier.
- Using star cookie cutters add some white fondant stars around the Pokemon for interest.
- Adhere Pokemon with extract.
- Adhere Pokemon Go Plus icon in the center front of the top tier. It is a nice contrast of colors to the map.
- Press the 'GO' logo in the right front center of the top of the cake and the team icon further back toward the left. Add poke stops where you wish.
Stand back and admire your hard work. Eat, enjoy, and go catch some more Pokemon!
