Popsicle Stick Boat
My younger brother wanted to make something out of popsicle sticks. He had a choice: boats or catapults? He chose boats. He still definitely wants to do catapults sometime in the future though. Since I was building it anyway, I thought, "Maybe someone else will want to build this," and an instructable it became. Enjoy.
Supplies
- 75 Jumbo Popsicle Sticks
- Hot Glue
- Hot Glue Gun
- Scissors
- A piece of paper
Cut Off the Ends of the Popsicle Sticks
Cut the ends off of 25 popsicle sticks. Keep 12 of the ends that stayed intact. We will use them later on. ;)
Making the Underside of the Boat: Part 1 - the Base
Put two popsicle sticks next to each other lengthwise and hot glue them down the middle.
Making the Underside of the Boat: Part 2 - Adding Sides
Attach a popsicle stick to each side lengthwise at a 45 degree angle. Then add another two popsicle sticks to each side at 90 degree angles.
Making the Underside of the Boat: Part 3 - the Front
Cut off 1 1/4" off of one of your twenty popsicle sticks. Cut a triangle out of the piece you just cut out and attach it to the end of your skeleton. Then cut another popsicle stick in half and cut 45 degree angles at the bottom of each one. With the shorter of these sides on the inside, attach them to the triangle at a 45 degree angle and hot glue both sticks together. Then cut two 2 1/4" inch pieces out and cut them as shown in the picture. After attaching the pieces to the hull in the places shown, cut triangles out to fit into the open spaces that are left in the front.
Making the Underside of the Boat: Part 4 - the Back
For the back, place 3 popsicle sticks against the back of the boat and draw an outline of the back. Cut the outline out and glue it to the boat.
Creating the Deck
Attach a popsicle stick to each back corner of the boat, facing inwards. Then glue two sticks together lengthwise and attach them to the open section of the boat. There should be a hole in the back of the boat from where you placed the two connected sticks. Fill this with hot glue to make sure no waplaced the two connected sticks. Fill this with hot glue to make sure no water can get in. Cut pieces to fit the rest of the open space to finish the deck.
Making It Anti-Sinkable
Hot glue every single connection between sticks to make it not sink.
Shields!!!
Time to use the pieces we've been saving since the beginning! Make six shields by attaching two ends together. Then glue three shields to each side, spaced out as shown.
The Figurehead and Steering Wheel
Cut a little silloutte out of some of the scraps and attach it to the front of the ship. Do the same for the steering wheel.
The Masts
Attach two sticks perpendicular to the middle of the deck, one in the front and one in the back, as shown in the picture. Fold the piece of paper into quarters and cut out two of the sections. Then cut a 1/2" into the long sides of each section. Put hot glue on the cuts and attach them to the masts by pushing the cuts onto the sticks.
Finished!
Appreciate what you have made!
