Portable Victory Garden

vg carts.jpg
During WWII, america and its peoples had to ration food to send to the boys over

seas. People started to grow their own food in "victory gardens" to support the cause. While

not exactly necessary today, a victory garden can still be a fun and educating experience to

make with your family and friends. And it moves to boot!

Supplies

Your supplies will include:
- shopping cart *
- compost
- vermiculite
- peat moss
- cardboard
- burlap sacs
- assorted seeds and plants
- a little elbow grease

*note: please do not steal a shopping cart, the ones used for this instructable were

obtained from a store that was going out of business. I am not responsible for any

punishment for theft of supplies.

Preparing the Cart

Now you will need to lay cardboard in the bottom of the bed in the cart. This will ensure that

there is support for the soil that will be added and it will help to prevent leaks in the whole

system.

Laying the Burlap

Cut the burlap sacks so that it is one ply. Lay each sac into the cart so that it lines the inside

completely. Don't worry about the number of sacks it takes to completely line the cart. This

step is important since if done incorrectly there will be leaks. Take your time

and line the cart completely.

Filling and Mixing the Soil

Now you want to mix the vermiculite, peat moss and compost together in the burlap lined

cart. The proportions are 1 part peat, 1 part vermiculite, and 1 part compost. The same goes

for the small upper section of the cart. Make sure the soil is mixed very well if you decide to go

that route. If mixing custom soil is not your forte, then a store bought mix will do fine.

Planting and Sewing

Now that the soil is thoroughly mixed and in the bed of the cart, it is ready to be utilized. You

can plant various herbs and flowers and vegetables in the victory garden. The best part is, it's

portable and you can share the "fruits of your labor" with the entire neighborhood!

Go Crazy with it!
