Preparing Print Bed for 3D Printer

When printing large prints on pyrex plates with PLA, it is helpful to use blue tape. I've found that Scotch 2093 1.8" works the best for my printer.

Unfortunately, with large prints the adhesive on this tape tends to pull away from the pyrex plate. This instruction walks you through the process of covering a plate in a way that resists separation.

Materials List

You will need:

  1. Scissors
  2. Blue Masking Tape (I've found Scotch 2093 1.8" is the best)
  3. Rubbing Alcohol
  4. J-roller
  5. Pyrex Plate
  6. Paper Towels (not shown)

Clean Plate

  1. Clean both sides of the plate thoroughly with rubbing alcohol and a paper towel.

Cut & Apply Blue Tape

  1. Using the scissors cut strips of blue tape that are approximately 1.5" longer than the pyrex plate.
  2. Leaving a 3/4" overhang ON ALL SIDES, carefully apply the tape to the plate in parallel strips.
  3. Be sure that the the tape overhangs on all sides of the pyrex plate.

Roll Surface With J-roller

  1. Using firm pressure, roll the tape surface with the J-roller.
  2. Be sure to roll out any air pockets that might have formed.
  3. If necessary, use a pin to pop air pockets and re-roll with the J-roller.

Flip Plate and Trim Corners

  1. Flip the plate over.
  2. Using the scissors, trim the corners as shown in the image.

Fold Tape Over Edges

  1. Carefully fold the excess tape over the edges of the Pyrex.

Roll Back With J-Roller

  1. Roll the folded tape with the J-roller.
  2. Be sure to roll out any air pockets that might have formed.
  3. If necessary, use a pin to pop air pockets and re-roll with the J-roller.

Complete!

You should now have a neat print plate that resists separation.
