Pull-up Polyhedra : Cube

Pull-up Polyhedra: Cube

This is a pull-up polyhedra made from a paper net ( a 2D shape) and some string. When mixed with some engineering and creativity this transforms into a 3D cube.

Supplies

  1. Square sheet of paper
  2. Scissors
  3. Pen or pencil
  4. String or yarn
  5. Single whole punch
  6. Adhesive - glue or tape
  7. Recycled thin cardboard - like a cereal box

Folding

Open up the paper and rotate 90 degrees

Fold in half again

Open the paper and take the edges to the center line

Trace and Cut

You should now have your square sheet of paper separated into a 4x4 grid of smaller squares

Trace the net shape as shown, looking something like a cross

Cut out your net

Cut Out Holes

IMG_7427.png

Using a single hole punch, make holes at the vertices indicated in the photo. Be careful not to get too close to the edge of the paper.

Threading the Net

Using string or yarn, thread through the holes as indicated.

Leave a few extra inches of string at the lower end of the net on both sides.

Mounting the Net

Use a recycled card board from a box and place your net on top.

Mark with a pen or pencil to match the placement of your net with the holes at the bottom.

Pierce through those holes with the single hole puncher, scissors, or another sharp object.

Glue the Net

Glue or tape the bottom square of the net to your cardboard.

Make sure you line up the holes on the net and cardboard as shown in the photo.

Test

Pull both strings at the same time and watch your net transform into a cube.
