Cobra Putter Restoration

In this project, I’ll show you how to restore and modify a stainless steel putter. Whether it’s old or just needs a fresh look, this guide will help you bring it back to life.

We’ll clean it up, fix any imperfections, and add a unique touch to make it stand out. This is a fun and rewarding project for anyone who loves golf or working with their hands.

Let’s get started!

Supplies

Rubber Vice Clamp

Heat Gun

Belt Sander with a Scotch Brite abrasive belt

Bead blaster with glass bead media

Electric Drill with 3/8 inch diameter drill bit.

New ferrule

Grip tape

New putter grip

2-Part Epoxy

Sand Paper - 400/600/800/1200/1500 grit

Polishing Compound

Shop Towel

Grip Solvent

Remove Putter Head

Place putter shaft into a rubber vice clamp.

With a heat gun, evenly apply heat to the hosel. The heat will loosen up the old epoxy and you will be able to pull head off by twisting putter head back and forth.

Remove Nicks, Dings & Scratches From Putter Head

Inspect putter head.

Slowly work out the dings with a belt sander. Apply putter head to the belt with even pressure and ensure you do not buff off too much material.

Finish with hand sanding. 600-800-1000-1200 grit.

Bead Blast

Blast putter with glass bead media in a sandblaster. This is to ensure all dings are removed. This will also give the putter head a pleasing matte finish. I prefer the matte finish because it reduces any sort of glare that you may encounter when putting.

Modify Ferrule

I decided to add a ferrule to this putter for a unique look.

The standard ferrule has a diameter and length that is too large for this application.

Place ferrule onto the proper size drill bit 3/8" diameter. For a tight fit, wrap some tape around drill bit and slide ferrule on.

Place drill bit into an electric drill. This is essentially a simple lathe. Sand down the diameter 400/600/800/1200/1500 grit/ polishing compound.

Install Putter Head

Place putter shaft into a rubber vice clamp.

Slide ferrule onto the putter shaft.

Mix up 2-Part epoxy and apply onto the shaft tip.

Install putter head onto the shaft.

Slide down ferrule to mate with hosel. The residual epoxy will ensure ferrule will be fixed into place.

Wipe up excess epoxy with a shop towel.

Install Putter Grip

Apply grip tape to the end of the putter shaft.

Coat grip tape and inside of grip with grip solvent.

Slide grip onto shaft with a smooth firm motion.

Make sure putter grip is perfectly aligned with putter head.
