Rainbow Light Saber- Made With Reused Materials

The "Rainbow Light Saber- Made with reused materials" is a light saber inspired glowing light. This stick of light is best seen in the dark and projects color. You can change the color by simply turning the wheel of color. To activate this you turn on a flash light that you have placed inside the handle with a little strap at the bottom to keep it secure. the light stick is mostly made out of a water bottle, a paper towel roll, and some plastic food wrap. This "light saber" is great for lighting your path while walking your dog at night, on Halloween, midnight snack trips, power outages, just a flashlight, or a toy. This was really fun to make you can use your creativity during decoration and the colors used. It only took me about half an hour to make, but about an hour with decorating the handle and letting it dry. Have fun!

1- Cut off the top dome like part of the water bottle. You will not need this for this project.

2-Cut a slit from the top to the bottom of the water bottle so you can open it up all the way.

3-Cut the top into sections, no less than 5. We do this so when the plastic is rolled up there is a top. If needed you may cut out the center of the bottom of the water bottle, there tends to be a thick piece of plastic that stands out on the bottom center of the bottle.

Now roll the bottle and tape it with clear tape. The top should be closed and the bottom should be open.

Then cut two identical (about 1.5") pieces of a wooden skewer or of tooth picks. Tape these on opposite sides of the opening of the bottle hanging down like in the picture.

Retrieve a paper towel roll, now cut it to the length you would like your handle to be.

Collect some plastic food wrap/cling wrap/saran wrap and roll it up. Now put that inside the water bottle portion of the light stick, this gives something to reflect the color and light, cut off any excess.

Use the remaining paper towel roll card board to cut a circle. The radius of the circle (Radius: the distance from the center of a circle to any point on the outside edge.) should be just a tiny bit smaller than the distance from one of the wood sticks to the other. Cut a small hole in the center of this circle. Make sure that when one stick is put through this hole snugly the circle does not hit the other stick. Spin the circle to test this and trim any parts that touch the other stick. You want the circle to be as big as possible without interfering with the other stick

Now cut out the card board like in the photo.
place clear tape all over one side of the circle, leaving the center hole uncovered. Then flip to the other side and repeat. Use a marker to mark where six equal sections are, or however may colors you would like to do (I am doing six). Color in each section with a color, or colors of your choice. Be Creative!

Place the color wheel on one of the wooden sticks, the stick going through the center hole. Then tape the handle to the bottom of the sticks, make sure the wheel moves easily but is not so loose it moves on its own.

Then tape a long piece of card board, from the paper towel roll (I had to tape two together) to the bottom of the handle.

You may now decorate if you would like. I painted the handle with a metallic gray acrilic paint and the strap, which you will learn the purpose of soon, rainbow. I then, while the strap's paint was still wet, sprinkled irridesent glitter all over it.

On the opposite side than the strap is attached to the handle you will place tape all the way up to the clear part. Now put one piece of tape hanging off partially on the end of the strap, making sure to secure it with more tape. Fold the very end of this tape, and even mark it if you would like. This will act as a holder for the flashlight inside the handle. The strap goes around the bottom of the flashlight and the tape will stick to the tape on the handle but not nearly as much as it would to the paint. So the strap easily secures and unsecures.

I apologise that the phootos are unpainted, if you choose to do this it will be the same, just decorated.

To use this undo the strap, turn on the light and put it in. Secure the strap and change the color. Simple and fun! Enjoy!
