Rainbow Spinning Top

Hello! I made a spinning top in my physics class, and thought I would add a little extra color and show you how to make one yourself! Enjoy!

Gather Necessary Supplies

First things first, get all of the materials! You will be needing:

  • 1 CD
  • 1 Marble
  • 1 Cylinder-Shaped Object (I used a "tape dispenser core". Look ahead to see how I used it.)
  • Super Glue (Hot glue might work, but superglue is lighter and won't mess up the balance of the top.)
  • Paint to decorate (I suppose this means you will also need a paintbrush, etc.)

... And that seems like that's it!

Paint the CD

Wow! This is probably the most fun and easiest step! ... Okay, well actually, most of this is pretty easy but that's beside the point. Be creative and decorate your CD until to your liking. I "primed" my CD first to ensure the paint stood out.

Attach the Marble

Alright, my apologies; I didn't take a picture before I attached the tape measure core... Using the super glue, attach the marble by resting the marble in the center of your painted CD. Only a small part of the marble should be able to be seen from the other side of the CD; the largest part of the marble should be on top of the CD. Apply the glue to where the marble and the CD meet.

Attach the Grabby Piece & Play!

I attached a tape measure core to the center of the top of my CD so it would be easier to spin the top. You can add a similarly shaped piece or you can just use the marble. I just added a little super glue and made sure the piece was in the center of the spinning top.

And with that, you have successfully made a spinning top! Enjoy!
