Rapunzel's Dress From the Golden Braid
WARNING: this project is very expensive it can cost $100-$200
The Golden Braid is an amazing retake of the story of Rapunzel by Melanie Dickerson that I found about a year ago. I quickly fell in love with the story and have since created a cosplay based off the dress that Rapunzel wore on the cover of the book. Unfortunately I was not able to find a fabric that matched the fabric on the cover exactly, but I thought that this fabric dolled up an otherwise semi plain dress. I also didn't have the time or resources to create a wig so I could have Rapunzel hair. Sorry I don't have a lot of pictures, I made the dress before I knew that I would write an instructable on it.
Supplies
- Butterick pattern #4827
- 8-10yds of fabric
- eyelets
- eyelet tool
- cord that matches your fabric
- lace or embellishment for belt
- interfacing
Cut Out and Make Your Dress
I don't have a lot to say about this part, except that if you are using a silk- like fabric you MUST MUST MUST zig- zag stich the edges of the pieces or else the fabric will fray at some point when you are wearing the dress. It will start to fall apart and then you will have an embarrassing situation. .The pattern comes with very detailed instructions. Do every thing except for hemming.
Hem It Up
The original dress in the pattern has a train on it but 1 the hem kept flipping up even after I turned it twice and 2 it made the dress slightly to long for me. you can keep the train or cut it off but if you cut it make sure to leave seam allowance.
Try It On
The dress should be quite fitted so you may need to take out the back cording a few times to get it right. Also personally I hate itchy seams under my arms so I put a small piece of fabric on the under arm seams to combat this.
You're Done!!
Braid your hair (or put on a wig), put on your dress, find your knight in shining armor and go be Rapunzel!!
