Raw Potato - Chickpea Vadai

These are very tasty deep fried fritters made with raw potatoes and chickpea lentils. Making of this fritters takes very less time, so you can try it whenever some unexpected guests visit your home.

This fritters can be served as Evening snack with coffee or tea

Ingredients

  • One Potato
  • One Onion
  • 3/4 cup of Chickpea lentils
  • One teaspoon of Black peppercorns
  • One teaspoon of Cumin seeds
  • One Greene chilli (add to your own taste)
  • An inch long piece of Ginger
  • Few Garlic cloves
  • Bunch of Curry leaves
  • Bunch of Coriander leaves
  • Half a teaspoon of Asafoetida powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for deep-frying

  • Soak Chickpea lentils in water for about 15 minutes. in the get ready the other ingredients
  • Peel potato and cut into pieces
  • Chop Onion into pieces
  • Finely chop coriander and curry leaves

  • Remove Ginger skin and chop into pieces
  • Shuck Garlic and cut to pieces
  • Now add ginger, garlic, green chilli, Black peppercorns, salt and Cumin seeds to a mixer grinder
  • Grind to a rough paste and keep aside

Grind Potato and Chickpea Lentils

  • After soaking the chickpea lentils for about 15 minutes, drain out water
  • Add the chickpea lentils and raw potato pieces to a mixer grinder and make a fine paste

Make Batter

  • Remove the chickpea - potato mix from the mixer grinder and keep in a wide mouthed pan
  • Add the spice paste prepared with ginger, garlic, Black peppercorn and cumin seeds to the mix in the pan
  • Add chopped onions, curry leaves and coriander leaves
  • Add the Asafoetida powder and mix well

Now our batter for making Vadai is ready

Heat Oil and Check

  • Heat required amount of oil for deep-frying in a pan over medium heat
  • Take lemon sized batter in your hand and shape into flat round. You can apply little amount of oil to your hand for this
  • Make a hole in the center of the shape. this will help in even cooking of the Vadai
  • Once oil is heated, add one piece to the pan and fry to a golden brown
  • Remove from oil, break the piece and check. Here we have used raw potatoes. So, by checking we can find out how long it will take for inside of the fritters to be fully cooked

Deep-fry Vadai and Serve

  • Now deep fry the remaining batter by shaping them into flat round with a hole in the center
  • You can add 2 to 3 pieces in the pan if there is space
  • Flip over the Vadai in the oil so that other side is also fried properly
  • Once the Vadai pieces are fried to a dark brown color, remove and drain out excess oil

Serve hot as an evening snack with Tomato chutney or Coconut chutney
