Renault Megane 05 Spark Plug and Coil Replacement!

Quick and easy guide to changing the spark plugs and ignition coils on a Renault Megane 05 plate 1.6 petrol engine.

I am by no means a mechanic and am purely self taught through research and just giving it a go.

I thought I'd share my experience, yours may vary, but this fixed my problem.
The car suffered from lack of power and chugging when low revs and the 'Toxic Fume Warning Light' appeared on the dash.

The Internet provided me with enough knowledge to help me decide to give it a go myself, saving £££ on garage labour.
Hope this helps others in turn!

I did not need to replace all the plugs and coils at once, I could have done them 1 at a time to find out which ones where causing the problem, however, I knew if I changed all of them I would have peace of mind that they were all new and shouldn't cause an issue for a long time(touch wood!!)


This cost me just under £100 and took me about 20mins to complete.

... Engine was off and cold when doing this. Please be safe.

Parts:
-replacement coils
-replacement spark plugs

Tools:
- 10mm socket (+small extension)
- Spark plug removal tool or long reach socket bar (with specific plug diameter socket)
- Telescopic magnetic (much advised)

Remove the top cover of the engine, usually held on with a couple of bolts/clips

Once you've located these, remove the connecting cables to all 4, a simple push clip holds these onto the coils.

A 10mm bolt holds these in place. Bit fiddly but an extended 10mm socket does the job. It's located just under where the cable was attached. Use a pen magnet if you have one, I know I would've lost the bolts if I didn't have one.
Once removed, the coils will just pull out.

I bought a specialised tool just for the removal of the spark plugs, cost me less then £10. Use this or your long reach socket to undo the plugs, located directly beneath where you just removed the coils from. The coils sit on top of the plugs.
They may be a bit stiff to turn at first, but eventually they'll losen. Again, an extendable pen style magnet helps remove the plugs if they don't come out still in the socket.

As you just removed the plugs and coils, reverse it for the new ones. Insert the new plugs and hand tighten. Once these are in, the new coils should sit on top of these.
Makesure to line up the bolt hole.
Remember to replace the 10mm bolts and finally connect the cables back on to the coil which it was removed from.

Replace engine cover and secure any removed bolts/nuts/fasteners
Remove all old parts and tools from the engine bay.
Turn ignition on and check if any warning lights come on.
Start the engine.
This worked for me and the engine sounded good as new straight away. No dip in revs or lack of power.

Keep the old plugs and ignition coils as spare, just incase.
