Repairing a Vest Pocket

On wearing a vest of mine, I noticed a pocket had come away, preventing me from putting my hand into it to keep it warm. On inspection, it had originally been glued in the manufacturing process and over time the glue had degraded. If had been glued in the first place, I reasoned in could be repaired by gluing too. Then I remembered hemming tape which is often used to shorten the length of trousers. As I don't have a sewing machine, I would repair the pocket by ironing on some hemming tape.

Reading the instructions on the hemming tape packet it said:

  • Measure and cut the tape to be a bit longer than the cloth to join.

Wet Before Use

  • Wet the tape before using and wring out excess water.

Iron On

  • Set Iron to Dry, Wool setting.
  • Iron over the tape.
  • As I was joining the cloth to a zip, I angled in the iron slightly for good contact.

After less than 5 minutes work the repair was completed.

I should have also done the same to the other pocket as within a few days of use it too had come off. Oh well, another 5 minutes of haberdashery work to do.
