Repurpose Old Wheels Into an Awesome Spinning Table!

Finding a table to match the wagon wheel Bench I made proved to be near impossible, so I decided since I could not find one I would make one! I located two wagon wheels at the local flea market for $20. *I am new to welding and have only done it maybe 4 times supervised.. this time I did it on my own.

This is the material I used to make the table. Two wagon wheels of course, square tubing, a piece of pipe, two washers, a bolt and a sheet of plexiglass. Both the wheels were bent, one more than the other.

I began by grinding the pipe to fit easily in the center of the less bent wheel. You want to make sure the wheel can spin on the pipe.

After grinding the pipe down, fit the washer on the pipe. I used a vise to level the washer on the pipe. This is what the wheel will be sitting on.

After fitting the washer, it is time to measure. Place the wheel on the pipe and hold it up to the other wheel, once measured cut it off. Next measure the length of the center of the will and cut the pipe the length. Then sand with the 220 grit sandpaper.

Now it is time to weld, using the vice to secure the pipe and washer I began to weld. Once the washer and pipe is welded on one side flip over and weld the other side. Let cool

After welding the pipe and washer, set it aside and move the bolt and washer onto the vice. Now weld the bolt and washer, then grind the weld smooth. This will serve as a cover and can be easily moved to give you several options when using your table.

Now take the square tubing and measure it, find and mark the center. Next take and cut the square tubing in half. Take those two halves and place them under the bent wheel as shown in the picture. Mark on the outside of the wheel on both of the half pieces.

Next take the wire brush and clean the pieces for welding, this ensures a good weld. Note they do not have to be spotless but need to be somewhat clean for the weld to take hold.

After cleaning the wheels and other pieces, it is time to weld the pipe to the wheel. Adjust the pipe on the wheel, and weld all the way around.

After welding the pipe to the top of the wheel, it is time to weld the legs on. You would want to find a level place for this process. Begin to weld the legs on, make sure you weld all the way around. After welding take the grinding wheel and smooth up the welds where you can.

After all the welding has been done and all the welds are smooth, it is time to spray the primer. In the pictures it shows too different color primers, this is because I ran out of one can and the other can was a different color.

After the primer has dried, it is time to start painting. I chose spray paint do to it's quick drying and easy to use feature.

Take the sheet of plexiglass and lay the wheel on top, take a marker and mark around the outside of the wheel. I used a Dremel tool with a diamond cutting wheel to cut the circle out of the plexiglass (Be careful as to the plexiglass will melt and become hot, make sure to wear safety glasses). Next I took and traced the inside of the wheel on to the plexiglass, after cutting that out I took it back to traced the center of the wheel and cut that out. After all the cutting is done I took the rough edges off using 50 grit sandpaper, and then smoothed it up with 220 grit sandpaper.

Of course plexiglass is somewhat hard to get exactly right. But do the best you can..
