Hi this is not only my first Instructables project but my first resin wood project without a mold. I found this table on the side of the road. While I did not make this table I am sure it could be very easy to cut out of wood also. But, you can take any table and design and apply it.

Supplies

Supplies Needed:

Disassemble & Sand

The First Three Pictures shown are the original table, that I found. Note, the bubbles

  • First Step -Using a screwdriver-disassemble table---Note: take pictures of exactly how item was put together so unlike me you can figure out how to reassemble. lol
  • Second Step--Once table is disassembled, you will take out your sander, Make sure hair is tied up and any loose clothing is safely tied-unlike me do not get you hair sucked into the sander. The last three pictures are the steps to fully sanded pieces.
  • Third Step-You will want to use the coarse sandpaper and size for your sander, go outside to sand items, you can use a table or any type of work table, I used the black and decker workmate bench to hold my pieces.

Painting With Acrylic Paints & Applying Permanent Vinyl

Unfortunately, I did not take any pictures after I painted except for the sides. Ok let's get started. To Prepare your sides for painting. You can do Horizontal or Vertical lines. You want to take you painter's tape and tape across the piece. for example: Red is your first color, place tape straight across to create crisp straight lines. You can continue to add tape down the sides, You will have too move tape as you go. because as we stated your first piece of tape will be over the yellow section, then the green, and so on so in order to paint the next spot you will need to remove the tape over that area.

The color pattern is, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Light Blue, Dark Blue, Purple

Once both sides have been painted you can then use a clear Acrylic Spray over piece to seal in color.

Paint the bottom Orange and the Top of table is purple. While paint dries, go an get your SVG file, cut & weed out your design using your cricut machine. Take your transfer tape and add design to the top of table piece.

Preparing Item for Resin Application & Common Mistakes

Now, here is where I give you some advice to avoid some of the common mistakes that I made.

1. Instead of taping the bottom of table tops, I suggest using the liquid latex, this supposedly will help to avoid resin from pooling on the opposite side. If you just use tape it can get stuck, if you leave it for too long, now if you want to use tape I suggest after at least 2 hours when resin is tacky to the touch you can then try to remove the tape.

2. Using a paint brush -brush the back with the liquid latex. PS. Wipe down top of tables with damp cloth to remove any particles.

3. Using plastic cups or something to put tops on top of.

4. Time to mix our resin, I forgot to mention and will try to go back and add to supplies, but when using resin you should wear a respirator, latex gloves, and have the room well ventilated.

5. you will need at least two 8 ounce cups or a 16 ounce silicone cup, when mixing silicone at least this product it is a 1 to 1 ratio. so you will first pour 4 oz of resin in cup, then 4 oz of hardener in cup. Mix using popsicle stick, set timer for three minutes. you can spritz some 70 percent alcohol to stop bubbles from forming.

6. Pour resin over the center of your tables, and unlike me if you have the full 16 oz ready to go then it should be enough to reach ends, Oh yeah make sure you either have a silicone mat or parchment paper under your table so that if the resin pours over it will not ruin your table. Resin will not stick to the silicone & parchment paper.

7. Using your gloved hands rub the sides to make sure that they have full coverage, should the resin not make it to your end of table you can tip the top back and forth or use a silicone brush-something flat to push around. then take the alcohol again spritz your resin, take your heat gun and lightly go around without staying in one place too long to avoid burning resin. You are doing this to remove any more bubbles. If you can cover table tops to avoid dust falling onto them. Fully cures usually around 48 hours.

8. Reassemble Table and clean with a resin polisher. As you can see by the pictures above, my tables created divets where the resin did not cover. to fix this I had to lightly sand top with fine sandpaper, cleaned surface, and did another pour, I ended up pouring three times before i got it right. People stated that the surface may not have been clean and it formed divets. If the resin was going straight onto the sanded wood first I would use a sanding sealant to seal wood before applying resin.

I hope this was not too confusing.
