Retrograde Clock Mods

the clock.jpg

I have made a minutes dial and base for Shiura's 'A Clock of Retrograde Minutes and Jumping Hours' (https://www.instructables.com/A-Clock-of-Retrograde-Minutes-and-Jumping-Hours/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email). This base includes a plunger with which to advance the minutes when first starting the clock. Base is designed to fit Shiura's original layout of the Arduino Nano mounted on a breadboard (breadboard is approx 5.5 cm x 8.2 cm x 0.85 cm in size).

Supplies

Number of screws:

3 x M2 x 5mm

3 x M2 x 6mm

SuperGlue

Print the 3D parts

Printing Information

Minute Half Ring

Print as orientated using ‘Pause at Height’ to achieve the coloured numbering or just pause the print after the numbering has printed once (2.2mm/layer 11 approx.). 0.20mm layer height and 100% infill. Material PLA.

Minute Half ring Tabs

Straight print 0.20mm layer height and 100% infill. Material PLA.

Retro Clock Base

Print as orientated, 0.28mm layer height, 20% infill. Material PLA.

Retro Clock Top

Print as orientated, 0.28mm layer height, 100% infill. Material PLA.

Retro Clock Longer Minute Hand

Print as orientated, 0.20mm layer height, 100% infill. Material PLA.

Retro Clock Top Screw

Print as orientated, 0.20mm layer height, 100% infill. Material PLA.

Retro Clock Top Nut

Print as orientated, 0.20mm layer height, 100% infill. Material PLA.

Retro Clock Spring

Print as orientated, 0.20mm layer height, 100% infill. Material PETG. Use tree supports and a raft.

I was able to run an art knife down the spring separating the spring from the supports, then unscrewed the spring off the raft and supports.

Retro Clock Plunger, Retro Clock Lower Spring Guide and Retro Clock Plunger Cap

Print as orientated, 0.20mm layer height, 100% infill. Material PETG. Raft for adhesion.

Mount the Plunger

Thread the top screw, from the underside, through the hole in the base top and secure with the nut. Place the plunger from the underside through the top screw, then put the lower spring guide over the plunger ( large end down ), next the spring, followed by the plunger cap. Secure the plunger cap with the 6mm M2 screw.

Glue the Tabs

Glue the 4 minute ring tabs in appropriate positions on the minute ring. Glue the minute ring to the clock using the tabs.

Fix Clock to Base

Secure the clock centrally to the base using the remaining 2 M2 x 6mm screws. You may need to drill a couple of pilot holes in the clock frame to aid easier fixing or you could, if you wish, glue the clock frame centrally to the base.

Fix the Top

Slot the top over the base and fix in place with the 3 M2 x 5mm screws and then replace the minute hand with new longer minute hand.
