Have you received the message:

"Remote control battery low, replace battery"

in your SID? This tutorial will describe how to replace the battery in your Saab 9-5 (1998-2010) and Saab 9-3 (2000-2002) key remote.

To do this you will need the following things:

  • A new CR1632 battery
  • A corkscrew/wine bottle opener

Removing the Plastic Cover

In order to get access to the battery you will need to remove the plastic cover located at the back of the remote key.

If you place the key with the backside of it facing upwards and look at the side of it you can see a small hole.

This hole is used to open the plastic cover and the easiest way to do this is with a corkscrew.

With the back of the key facing upwards you will insert the tip of the corkscrew into the hole and gently bend so that the tip will push the cover up from the inside.

The plastic cover will then pop up a bit so you can use your fingers to remove the cover completely.

Removing the Old Battery

Now when we have removed the plastic cover we have access to the battery.

Before you remove the battery, note that the + side of the battery is mounted facing upwards. It's important the the new battery is mounted thesame way.

To remove the battery you have to press the small plastic flap downwards, the battery will then pop up and you can now remove it gently.

Insert the New Battery

To insert the new battery you will take your new CR1632 battery and make sure that the + side of it is facing upwards and then slide it underneath the two metal flaps. Then you push it all the way until the plastic flap pops up and lock the battery in place.

Reassembly the Plastic Cover

Now when you have installed your new battery you just have to reassembly the plastic cover.

The plastic cover has two plastic flaps on one side and one on the other. The side with just one flap should be facing the small hole we used to remove the cover. On the other side you will also see two tracks inside the key for the two plastic flaps.

Insert the two plastic flaps into the traces and then just push on the other side together until you hear a "click".

Now you have a new battery installed!

Go out to your car and try it, unlock and lock the car a few times to make sure the now battery works correctly.
