Scorpion Mask (MKX)

You can now bring the comfort of the Netherrealm into your own home!

Using common materials, I created an inexpensive Scorpion mask, as seen in Mortal Kombat X.

The total amount I spent on this project was $1.75

All you'll need for this project is

• Scissors and Exacto Knives
• Glue stick
• Hot glue & Hot glue sticks
• Pattern
• A cardboard cereal box
• Black Spray Paint
• Gold and black acrylic paint
• Scrap fabric (preferably black)
• Scrap mesh screen

I recommend only doing this mask one half at a time, as it is split straight down the middle and symmetrical on both sides.

Print out the patterns (found on Step 1) and lightly glue them down onto the cardboard box, then using your scissors or exacto knife, cut out each of the pieces.

Piece A was supposed to act as a back to piece F (letters shown in guide), but got distorted, so you will need to trim piece A as shown in the images above, then glue the two to each other.

Then, stack and layer the three E pieces, with E1 on top of E2, and E2 on top of E3, and fold these along the lines.

Attach piece B to piece C along the neighboring edges on the pattern

Once you have done this, attack piece C to piece F along the edges shown in the image.

Glue in the triangle, piece D, into the corner made by pieces C and F.

Then, glue the now stacked and folded E pieces into the arch of piece C closest to the center.

Once this is done, bend and glue piece G, the cheek piece, to piece F as shown.

Once you have done all of this, you can repeat the steps and create the other half of the mask.

Now that you have your two halves to the mask, simply line them up and using small pieces of scotch tape, tape them in places.

You then can carefully open up the mask (seen in image two) and make a generous seam of hot glue running down where the pieces meet, and you should be left with a full mask, as seen in image three.

Figure out about how far your mask must be held open: if you have a slender face, you will need only a narrow triangle chin plate, and if you have a wide face, you will need a wider triangle chin plate.

Hold your mask down on a piece of cardboard and draw the angle formed, then throw in an arch to the triangle, as seen in image two.

You can then glue your chin plate to the rest of the mask, and you should be left with something like images 3 and 4.

Lay pieces of screen onto the inside of your mask and cut the rough shape of the hole on the cheeks.

Then, using rectangular strips of cardboard, secure the screen down, filling the cheek holes.

Start with a base coat of black spray paint over the inside and outside of the entire mask (not pictured)

You can then go over the mask with a layer or two of gold acrylic paint, and don't make it too thick, as the black showing through can make a nice distress effect.

Using your exacto knife and a great deal of caution, create scratches randomly around the mask, and peel away cardboard between the scratches so paint can get into them.

Using the common distressing method of having watered black acrylic paint, go over the surface of the mask and wipe away the black acrylic paint as soon as you can.

To finish, let the mask dry and add a simple strap of black fabric to go over your ears.

Your Scorpion mask is now done!
