Screens for Sifting or Drying

100_0989.JPG

This instructable shows how i made some screens that can be used for sifting or drying proposes. The one shown i used aluminum window screen. i also made some with 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch screen materials. this frame is made to be easily taken apart for when the screens need to be changed.

Frame

the frame is 1x4 lumber. i made my frame 24x18. the supports along the sides are 24 , and 19.5 because of the overlap of the joints. the frame i screwed together at the corners with wood screws because the frame should not have to be taken apart.

the supports on the sides are made from a 1x4 that i ripped in half. the supports have the holes for the washer and screw head counter bored. you dont have to do that, but i wanted to. there will be a machine screw through this hole.

T Nuts

to hold the supports on the frame i used T nuts for the screws to attach to. you could use regular nuts on the inside of the frame but i like these T nuts because they hold themselves in place. you drill a hole big enough for the stem to fit through and with a rubber mallet drive them into the wood. if you dont drive them in they will pull themselves in when the screw is tightened.

Assembly

this is after assembly. i put one side together then stretch the material the best i can and attach the other side. then do it again for the ends. with the window screen material i could just push the screw through the material. with the 1/4 and 1/2 screen i had to align the material with the screws.
