Sequined Halloween Ornament
I wanted to make something pretty for Halloween this year and I was inspired by these ornaments that Penolopy Bulnick made. I made a jack o' lantern, a ghost, and a Halloween colored abstract one. I think they turned out pretty cute and very sparkly!
What You'll Need
Here's what you'll need:
- sequins (I used these)
- pins (here are the one I used)
- styrofoam balls (you can use whatever size you want, but I used these)
- ribbon ( I used 1/8 inch wide, but you can you whatever width and color you want)
- permanent marker
Create Details
I marked the initial design in permanent marker before I started sticking any pins in the styrofoam and I would recommend doing this sort of planning beforehand. The more you stick pins in the foam and take them out the weaker the foam gets, so it pays to plan ahead! By creating the outlines first, the details will be more prominent.
Once you have your design laid out, start with whatever your background color will be, and outline the detailed shapes by placing your sequin and sticking a pin through the hole in the center of it. Each sequin should overlap the ones next to it slightly, so there's no white foam showing through.
Fill in the Background
Once all your details are outlined, continue placing sequins until the entire main color is filled in. Orange, in this case.
Fill in Details
Once the background is done, you can add the details. This is where it's important to be extra careful when placing sequins because the details are what will make or break yours design. I find it easier to make things that are not symmetrical so you don't have to worry about getting the sides the same, but to each their own.
Add String for Hanging
If you want to hang your ornament, you can add a string easily by cutting a short length of ribbon and pierce both ends with the pin after stringing a sequin on the pin first. Put some glue on the part of your ornament you want to attach the ribbon, then stick the pin with the ribbon and sequin. Set it aside for the glue to dry.
Hang Up Your Ornaments!
Hang your ornaments or place them in a bowl for a fun, sparkly, Halloween decoration! You can also make many more designs, you're only limited by your own imagination!
