Sideswept Bangs for Thick Hair
Sideswept bangs are a super cute, versatile, universally-flattering hairstyle. You can dress it up or down, and it's perfect for keeping your hair out of your eyes while it's in a growing-out phase. But if you have thick, straight, processed (read: dry) hair like mine, your hair probably wants to just hang straight down. It took me forever to figure out how to create a sideswept look that lies in a natural-looking, flattering manner (I kept ending up with a Midwestern 90s pouf situation). Turns out, it's super simple. Read on to learn how to quickly and easily recreate this romantic, flirty, Bieber-eseque look.
Prep
You'll need:
- Heat protectant spray (I use Paul Mitchell Heat Seal)
- Bobby pin or hair clip
- Roundbrush (I use a Paul Mitchell Express Ion Round L)
- Blowdryer (I use a Paul Mitchell Neuro)
- A lightweight hairspray (I use Sebastian Shaper)
You can start with wet or dry hair. As with all heat styling, it's crucial to use a heat protectant like Paul Mitchell's Heat Seal to prevent heat damage, so make sure that wet or dry, the area you're styling is fully protected.
Sectioning
The key to successful blowdrying is to use small enough sections, and your bangs are no exception. Pin the top portion of your bangs out of the way, leaving out the 1" band closest to your forehead.
The Blowdrying Technique
- Brush under: Place the round brush on top of the hair. Brush the hair away from your face and to the side, with the blowdryer blowing the hair into the brush from underneath.
- Brush over: Place the round brush under the hair. Brush the hair toward your face and to the side, with the blowdryer blowing the hair into the brush from above.
- Repeat: Repeat steps 1 and 2 in 1" horizontal sections till you reach the top of your head.
Voila!
Finish your style with a light mist of hairspray. I combed through my bangs with my fingers immediately after hairspraying so it looks more lived-in and natural, like maybe I woke up like this.
