Simple Samus Helmet
Go ahead, call it boxy if you want, but I prefer "8-bit", or even "Retro".
Materials
To build the helmet, you will need:
-Two cardboard boxes that are roughly the same size
-Some transparent green plastic. (I used a file thingy, but a sandwich bag and a green sharpie would work in a pinch)
-Red spray paint. You might need a secondary color for the detail work, but I ended up not using it.
-Access to a hot glue gun
-A knife to cut cardboard with
And for the detail work, I used a couple of spare pieces of wire conduit and a piece of paper.
Cutting the Boxes
To start off, mark where your going to cut the boxes with a sharpie. Trace the outline of one box onto the side of the other a little more than one inch from the top and front, then do the other side, this will be the faceplate. For the other box, just draw a line all the way around the narrow side that splits it in half, this box will make up the sides of the helmet. After your done playing with the markers, go ahead and cut the box. WARNING: Improper use of a sharp knife could result in loss of limbs, please be careful.
Cut Out the Visor
Put the faceplate on your head and mark where your eyes are, then use that as a guide for where to cut out the visor shape.
Trim the Excess Cardboard
Trim some of the excess cardboard from the sides.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Start Your Glue Guns!
Glue the sides of the helmet to the faceplate. The best way to do this is to put the glue on the faceplate and then set one of the sides on top. You might need to add more glue depending on what kind of cardboard you used, but mine was very sturdy after just one application.
Spraypaint the Box
Oh, you got to this step a little too late, the picture just got away. :(
Add the Plastic for the Visor
Just hot glue it into place. I used some transparent green plastic, but a sandwich bag and a green sharpie will do the trick.
This Is Where the Fun Begins
For the helmet details, I used some spare wiring conduit and hot glued it to the sides of the helmet. Then I took a piece of paper, folded it in half, and cut it for a template, from there you just trace the paper with a sharpie until you get the look you want.
Aaaaand your done. This is my first real instructable, so any feedback would be apreciated. Thanks for reading!
