Simple *altoids* Tin Emergency Candle

I use the word Altoids seeing as how you can using a Altoids instead of the one I have. None the less, you can use this with any simple metal can.


This would be my first instructable, I just made my account yesterday. I hope everybody likes it, even though it's a bit amateur.

I, in no way, meant to copy eaKlondon's candle. I did not know he had made one until I had finished this instructable.

Ingredients

1 large pot

1 small pot

1 box of matches

1 candle or bar of wax

1 pair of scissors or other cutting tool

1 butter knife or prying tool

Some super glue

Take whatever wax you are using and crumble it with the prying tool you are using. If you have a bar of wax then you can just break it with your hand. Cut off the wick if you have a candle or get a piece of thick string. When you have a decent amount put it on a plate and leave it for now. Onto the double boiler, get you large pot and smaller pot and, depending on size, fill the larger pot up with water until the smaller pot's bottom hits the water. Turn on the heat and wait. After about a minute take your wax and pour it in there. While you are waiting for your wax to heat up (about five minutes) I will tell you about double boilers. Wax is too flammable to be put straight on stove top so you must double boil it. The gasses the wax produces when heated up are also flammable so watch out for that when using a flame as a heat source.

After your wax is melted, you can put it in the mold or container. Who know? Maybe for your emergency candle you would like to make a clay cast of a superman action figure.  Unless you have never experienced anything above 97 degrees Fahrenheit then you know that the container will be hot. You can slide an spatula and move the container around if it is in the way. Next step is to get the wick to stay is the middle. Get two chopsticks or other items of similar size and use rubber bands to hold the chopsticks together. Then put the wick in the middle and let it sit.

will waiting for the wax to cool, we will finish the lid. Take your lid and a box of matches and cut out some of the (unless you have a pack of small matches, then just just take out the whole thing.) striker pad. Take you super glue a put some on the back of the pad. Then stick it to the bottom of you lid cover. Take some matches and leave them with the striker for your emergency fire starter.

If you would like you could tape the matches next to the striker pad so they don't move around.

As you can see I have skipped ahead to when the wax has cooled after leaving it in the freezer for about 30 minutes. Pop the lid on that sucker and you have a super cool emergency candle that you can show to all your friends at school. A small tip would be for harsh conditions that you could wrap duck tape around the opening to make it water proof so that the striker or matches don't get wet. You could also spray paint it neon yellow so it's easy to see in a black out.
