Simple Deep Sea Jelly Fish Costume

jf.jpg

Our carnival float theme for our scout group entry this year was 'under the sea'. We needed some cheap yet effective costumes for our adult volunteers to wear and this one was my baby!!

Get the Gubbin's Together!

You will need:
an umbrella (not pictured!) I have used see through ones but I think coloured ones may also work, the plastic variety may be better for sticking the tape to.
Wide, double sided sticky tape
Florist ribbon
A number of large clear plastic bags

Let the Fun Begin!

Open the umbrella.
Cut length's of double sided tape to fit the bottom of each umbrella section (between the rib's)
Stick the tape to the inside of the umbrella.

Starting from the sealed end of the bag, roll the bag up until it is like a long sausage.
Cut inch wide section's from the whole bag, these will become tentacles!

Step Three

Cut length's of florist ribbon, mine were roughly four feet but you can do longer or shorter depending on the desired look.
Using scissors or a ribbon curler, curl the ribbon into loose curls along the whole length.

Step Four

jf5.jpg
Begin sticking the 'tentacle' strips onto the double sided tape.
Leave a gap in between each strip and a sticky edge along the top most part of the tape.

(I would recommend completing step's 5 and 6 on each section before moving onto the next to prevent getting 'stuck'!)

Step Five

Stick you ribbon curls in between the plastic tentacles.
You should now have alternate plastic/ribbon tentacles along the whole section.
Stick a second layer of plastic tentacles onto the upper part of the double sided tape strip. This will help give depth to the jelly fish tentacles.

When you have completed tentacle attachment to all the sections make sure that no sticky parts of the tape are showing. I just stuck scraps of the plastic onto any uncovered parts. If you don't do this then the remaining sticky bits will stick together if the umbrella is closed and will also stick to any hair that gets close! (yes this is the voice of experience!! ouch!)

Finished!

So there you have it, a simple, inexpensive but effective costume. (modeled here by my lovely son!)
You could have lots of fun with this theme, add different coulored ribbons or use colored plastic bags.
The pink jelly fish also pictured at the start is slightly different, I used bubble wrap instead of plastic bags for the tentacles and added strips of crepe paper for extra pizzazz!

This is my first instructable, I hope you have enjoyed it. I would love to hear your comments xx
