Smash Bros

One of the greatest games ever created, Super Smash Bros: Melee, combines the simplicity of controls with an extensive strategy of gameplay conjoining to make the most unique fighting game of its era. Although there were other Super Smash Bros games, this one easily rose to the top in the gaming community as well as been the a centerpiece for many childhoods.

Choosing Who You Are

This is the most important step. You have to chose the character that best attributes you, every character has their own play style same as every player. For example: If you are a more technical player than Fox is your route. He is the most difficult player to master but his abilities make him the most rewarding. Another example would be if you are a more unorthodox player and like to take the underrated, underdog character than Pikachu is for you. Its okay if you cant find the character that best suites you right away, it takes time to find your inner melee.

Choosing the Map

Once you have found the character that you feel most comfortable with you must select the map. This is also a key factor in mastering melee. There are two types of maps; Tourney and Reg. Tourney Maps are the Maps that can only be used in Tournaments. These are even maps that don't have any alterations during game play. There are only five of these maps and include: Yoshi's Story, Pokemon Stadium, Battlefield, Fountain of Dreams, Final Destination.

Playing

After youve got your character and map picked now comes the fun part. Becoming a true Smash player. Smash is one of the most unique games and probably one of the best ever solely based on its game play. The controls are very simple and easy to pick up because there is no combo list, instead you create your own. There are many types of players and skill levels. Obviously the more you practice the better you become.

In a regulation match you have 4 stocks (lives) and 8 minutes to deplete the your opponents stocks. You do this by racking up their percentage and eventually getting them so far off the map they cant recover.

Controls

The Controls to this game are very simple and even the least experienced gamer can just pick up and play. The base of the controls are learning how to DI (direction input) which is the direction of the left analog stick in the direction you wish to go.

Another basic of the game is jumping. You point of the left analog in the up direction, or by the tapping of Y or X. This helps you become more elusive to your opponent and can eventually help you set up Combos.

Attacking is obviously the most important basis of the game. This allows you too control your opponent and ultimately win the the game. A and B are basic attacks. The tapping of one of these buttons should be coinciding with a DI as different DI cause different moves. For instance A and a DI up are attacks that can hit your opponent into the air or hit a character that is already in the air.

Recovery

Recovery is very important to a match of Smash. When you're percentage gets too high from being hit, the further you go after every time you come in contact with one of your opponents attacks. This means you travel farther from the stadium. If you are pushed to far off the stage in any one direction you die, and lose a stock. A way to counter act this process of being kicked off the map (literally) is by using a DI, Jumping, and Up B-ing or even side B-ing. These combinations usually are enough to help you get back to the stage or grab ledge which you're able to pull yourself on to the stage.

Technique (Short Hopping)

This is the most important move you have to get down at an early stage in order to become a great technical player. Short hopping or Short jump (officially) is the act of pressing the jump button or pushing the control stick upwards and releasing before the player leaves the ground. The result is that is a lot lower than a normal jump allowing the player to perform aerial attacks closer to the ground. This is very useful for spamming aerials because you're performing them close to the ground.

Technique (Wavedash)

There are many exploits in the games physic mechanics. Wavedashing is one of the most important moves in competitive play because not only does it allow you to attack while moving but is key to performing more difficult combos.

Wavedashing itself is very hard to perform and take a lot of practice and muscle memory to perform due to the timing and inputs required to perfect the task.

Wavedashing is simply crouching and then jumping while immediately air into the ground.

Dash Dancing

The dash-dance is an advanced technique in the Super Smash Bros. games. Performed by rapidly tapping the analog stick left and right while on the ground, it cancels out the character's initial dashing animation with another animation in the opposite direction, causing the character to quickly and repeatedly dash to the right and left in a short distance.

Spike

A spike is an attack that sends the opponent downwards off the edge of the map instantly killing them, but the attack cannot have its knock back interrupted via meteor cancelling. As a result, they are significantly more dangerous than the similar meteor smash.
