Sofa Bed From Scrap
We have guests over all the time and were giving them a king (single) bed mattress that we had. It was not uncomfortable but we had it schelpping all over the place. Then when we needed a sofa I decided to work out a way to use this mattress to make it. I got a bed base from a relative and got started.
My list of materials
- Mattress
- Mattress Base
- Batting
- Upholstery fabric
- MDF
- Plywood
- 3 pieces of 2 x 4
- Garden box ends
My tools
- Brad nails
- Stapler gun
- Adhesive spray
- Wood screws
- Hammer
- Chisel
- Pliers
Stripping the Base
This was probably the least fun part of the build. Getting out all the staples took a lot of effort. I attacked those staples with all the tools and it took me a few hours to get a few hundred staples out. I threw away all the batting and fabric that I removed.
The Bed Part
I lay the newly liberated bed base in a sandwich pattern with the upholstery fabric, the batting, then the bed base and lastly the mattress. I started by stapling one side of the upholstery fabric. Once this was done I pulled hard on the other side and started stapling. To ensure that the fabric was even without creases I initially put staples at the ends and then one in the middle.
