Looking for a way to upcycle an old bracelet into something summery and elegant? This Instructable gives you the steps to make a soft and elegant summertime bracelet out of an old dated bangle and some yarn.

Supplies

  • Yarn
  • Bangle bracelet
  • Utility knife or small hack saw
  • Elmer's Glue
  • Small bowl or container
  • Plastic fork
  • Plastic sandwich bag
  • 2 - large beads (or similar sized objects)
  • Optional: Glitter

Prepare the Old Bracelet

First, cut a small section (approximately 1 cm) out of an existing bangle. If using a cheap plastic bracelet, a utility knife or small hacksaw should work fine for this, but it will take a little elbow grease. For a metal bracelet, a small hacksaw should be used.

Once the notch has been cut out of your bracelet, cut open a sandwich bag and cover the bracelet tightly with the plastic. This will help ensure the yarn covering doesn't slide around the surface of the bracelet and will give it a more rustic shape.

Preparing the Yarn

You could simply wrap the yarn around the bracelet at this point, but if you want a more durable piece of jewelry, I suggest coating the yarn in a glue/water mixture before wrapping it. This has several benefits, including:

  • keeping the yarn from fraying
  • keeping the yarn from shifting on the bracelet, and
  • attaching extra decorations

Mix one part glue with two parts water in a small bowl or plastic container. Using a plastic utensil, mix approximately 6 yards of yarn into the mixture (or more if your bracelet is significantly larger/thicker) until all the yarn is completely coated (see pictures for reference).

Wrapping the Bracelet

It is easiest to start wrapping the yarn from the middle of the bracelet. To do this, loop the middle of the yarn over the middle of the bracelet and begin wrapping down one side, as shown. Do the same for the other side until the bracelet is fully covered except for about a half-centimeter from each end. Make sure to push the loops of yarn tightly together to ensure the entire bracelet underneath is covered.

Add the Finishing Details

Trim any excess yarn tails and glue the ends of the yarn to the bracelet.

Finally, glue a large bead or similar sized object onto each end as shown. You may need to drill or carve out the middle of the bead if the hole size does not match the diameter of the bracelet.

Let the project dry overnight.

Optional: For a little extra glamour, sprinkle glitter onto the yarn while still wet with the glue/water mixture.

Additional Notes

Once dry, your bracelet is ready to wear! If you applied glitter, make sure to shake it off gently before wearing to remove any glitter that has not been fully attached.

Enjoy how your new wrist candy catches the sunlight and glistens when you wear it out with your favorite summer outfit.
