StaCups

Cups. 3D-printed stackable nested cups generated though Grasshopper in Rhino.

Supplies

  • Creality Ender 3 Pro 3D printer
  • Stock 1.65 white filament
  • Rhino 6 + Grasshopper
  • Ultimake Cura

Scaling Height for Nesting Cups

Only scaling the width of nesting cups but not height looked pretty odd. The innermost cup became very tall and skinny.

By scaling both width and height, the cups all looked more like cups and seemed like they would be able to nest into a stack.

Was wondering why my counter of 3 cups in the stack was producing 4 cups visually. Forgot that the input curve displayed as an extra cup.

Printing With Skirt

cura_preview.PNG

First attempt at printing. Chose skirt for plate adhesion. Printer drew an outline around all 3 bases of the cups and then proceeded to knock them over.

Unsuccessful.

Printing & Bed Leveling

cura_brim.PNG

Modified in Cura to use brim for plate adhesion. Seemed like it should be able to more reliably keep the prints on the bed.

Printer proceeded to mess up the calibration line and drew random shapes for brim for the next few attempts at printing.

Found out that the bed was not properly leveled and should be leveled based on center of bed since print is small and centered.

Unsuccessful 2-4th attempts.

Promising Print

Successful print of small set of 3 cups. Largest cup is approx. 3.5cm tall. Total print time is around 50 minutes.

Larger Cups

Scaling up max scale to bake larger cups now that smaller prototypes successfully printed.
