When you get your canvas lightly sketch the horizon and main lines. Here you shouldn’t go into any detail, because it will be covered. Incorporate the main big objects .

Mix Your Colors

In a small cup pour some turpeniod to help mix the oil paint. It also helps to clean the brush, water doesn’t work. On your paint plate squeeze out some paint. First thing is the background. Mix your blue, red, white and softly blend to create a calm sky. With a dark color make the main dark spots . Create wavy lines to demonstrate waves.

After you do that add in a little lighter darker color. Here I did that with the color purple. Also with the same dark color create the clouds. Then, with a lighter shade add spots around the edges like show above. Take a dry brush and make fast motion upwards, and clean the brush between every stroke.

Add the Water

It’s good to have a reference picture. You look where there’s darks and lights and add it on your canvas. After doing that , take a larger brush and gently blend the paint together. Often clean your brushes by using your turpeniod and the rag.

Colored Highlights

When your done blending your waves and your satisfied it’s time to move on. Mix a color of your choice with white. I chose orange here. Add this to the lightest areas of your painting. Now you blend with a damp clean brush, be gentle. Also add a few more little clouds off on the side.

Next, make a white circle and blend yellow around the circle. Add in a little orange . In the water you can start to add more details. Make More smaller darker, lighter, medium shades of waves . Add different colors, have fun with it.

Take your palette knife and create a nice color to create the colors for your painting. Layer in the dark and the light till you are satisfied. Don’t mix on the canvas. Only gently blend.

You are done! Congratulations you did great. Since this is an oil painting it will take a few days to dry fully. It’s best to put it aside somewhere safe and dry ,and nothing touching the wet paint. In about 24 hours the painting should be dry and ready. But I would recommend to do a test swipe on the side just to be sure. Hope you had fun!
