Super Strong Refrigerator Magnets
Magnets can be used to hold household items to your refrigerator, toolbox or other metal objects. The problem with most standard magnets found around the house is they aren't very strong and aren't able to hold much, not even a typical calendar. Here, we will show you how to make super strong magnets that solve this problem. After you make a few, you may find some other very creative ways to use them, as we have!
Items Needed
Any duct tape will work, and if you don't have any, there are many colors and patterns to choose from on Amazon. You'll likely need to purchase the strong magnets used in this project; I happened to have some from another project. The exact size of these magnets isn't super important as long as it fits within the duct tape. I've found magnets about 1 inch by 1/2 inch and about 1/8 inch thick work great for our needs.
How to Make Them
Cut about 3-4 inches of duct tape and place it sticky side up in front of you.
If you bought a set of magnets, carefully peel one of them from the stack.
Place the magnet across the center of the duct tape.
Fold up the sides of the tape, lining up both sides and sticking them together. Pinch the tape onto the magnet in the center working out to the ends.
Trim the tab leaving half an inch or more. The tab helps with pulling/moving the magnet. Trim the ends as well, being careful not to cut too much and expose the magnet. Feel free to round the ends of the tab for a more finished look, if desired.
A word of caution: Neodymium magnets are very strong, but also very fragile, so be very careful not to place them too close to each other, or they will attract each other and 'snap' together, typically causing one or more of the magnets to break. They can also create quite a blood blister if your finger happens to come between them. These magnets are not recommended for use around 'little fingers'.
All done!
If one magnet isn't strong enough for your purposes, you can stack 2 together to get more pulling power. Using two magnets in my project, I was able to lift a 2 pound exercise weight. That should be enough to hold even the largest of calendars on your refrigerator! You can also use these magnets to hold car keys, tools, a stapler or any moderately sized item made of iron based metal.
We hope you enjoy this project as much as we have!
