TOY LOCOMOTIVE

INSPIRATION PROVIDED BY JOLIEN BREBELS.

I'm about to become a grandpa for the first time. The baby is due around Thanksgiving. I know I jumped the gun, but I had to make him his first wooden toy. Making a locomotive was the perfect choice. I can always add other cars.

Jolien Brebels makes fantastic wooden vehicles. I selected the locomotive.

I started by cutting out 6 wheels

I rummaged through my box of hardwood cut-offs. For the boiler, I selected a chunk of purpleheart. I added a dowel for the smokestack, a wooden plug for the headlight, and rouned off the top edges.

I cut a cow catcher on the chassis. I made a simple cab with two side portals. Planning ahead, I added a coupler to be used for adding additional train cars.

I dry fit everything.

I glued all the parts. When dry, I finished with Tung Oil.

I built couplers to use to connect the additional cars. Then I added the COAL CAR and a CABOOSE.
