Tabletop Mini Smoke Machine for D&D

20210129_164339.jpg

This instructable was created to help tabletop Dungeon Masters and Game Masters create cool smoke effects for their terrain with an affordable DIY smoke machine from a up-cycled Vape/E-cig. It can be made with other vape mods but the 3D printed part is designed specifically for the Cerberus tank, you would need to make your own modifications if you want to use alternative parts.

The principle project design was inspired by a photographer Petri Damsten

I remixed the part to fit the specific Vape tank and purpose.

This article also assumes you are already familiar with the function of a Vape/E-cig. If not, I highly suggest you do your own research.

This is a very simple project.

The key to this project is the single 3D Printed part which is sized to fit exactly with the Cerberus tank. It can be printed without supports, though the barbed hose fitting may print poorly if your FDM printer is not dialed in.

Print the part.

Connect Hose and Tank

Next you'll need to connect the 12" length of 3/8" ID tubing to the barb on the 3D printed fitting and then slide the Cerberus tank into the center hole, with the smaller diameter hole flush with the flat bottom of the tank, so only the threads protrude. Then screw the whole unit into the GeekVape Aegis mod.

Insert 1/4" Tube

Insert the length of 1/4" tubing into the mouthpiece and cut to necessary length. That's it! construction is complete.

The mini smoke machine works on a very simple principle: instead of triggering the Vape/E-cig and sucking the vapor into your lungs through the mouthpiece, you are triggering the heating coils and forcing air through the intake and blowing smoke out of the mouthpiece. That pushes the vapor through your tubing and onto your table in the form of smoke/fog effects, as you can see in the photos.

Options

As an option

You can attach a Tee-connector to 2 more lengths of 1/4" ID tubing to deliver smoke to 2 areas.

Additionally, to be more aesthetically pleasing, I used to two 3D printed bushes, to hid the ends of the tubing on the tabletop, by drilling a hole to insert the tube and several small exhaust holes for the smoke/fog to disperse on the table.
