Tap Dance Floor From Shelves, Scrap Wood, Foam
Here’s to impromptu projects with supplies on hand!
Unfortunately, I had a small flood in my studio last month. I lost a big cabinet but I was able to salvage two of the shelves. Simultaneously, I’ve been really missing my Thursday night tap dance classes and I didn’t have a place to tap for online classes- until now!
I used the shelves and some EVA foam and wood scraps in my studio to make this tap floor. It’s a bit small but it works! I'm looking forward to getting into a normal routine of taking classes again. :)
Supplies
- Shelves from old bookshelf/cabinet
- Scraps of wood (mine were 1.5 in x .75 in x about 4 feet)
- Scraps of EVA foam - enough to cover the two pieces of wood on top and below
- Wood Glue
- Screws (8) and Nails (4-20)
Cut the Wood and Foam to Size
First, watch the video above for an overview.
- Cut two pieces of wood to be the length of the two shelves laid side-by-side (these will act as beams)
- Cut foam strips to match the width of the beams. You should make them long enough so that the foam will cover the top and bottom of both beams.
Assemble the Pieces
Take a look at the diagram above to assemble the pieces as shown.
- Add wood glue to the space between the shelves (if you have a large clamp, clamp them together and wait for it to dry)
- Lay a foam strip, then the wood beam, then another foam strip along the edge of the two shelves.
- Use screws to attach all the pieces together at the corners and close to where the two shelves meet.
- Add additional nails to keep the foam in place. If the foam has any seams, use extra nails around the seams.
Repeat the above steps on the other side.
Reinforce the Connection Point
- Use the extra scraps of wood to reinforce the connection between the shelves. Affix each of the scraps with two screws, one into each of the two shelves.
- Flip the tap floor over and add more wood glue to fill in any space between the shelves. Clean excess glue away.
- Let dry completely before putting weight on it.
Time to Tap!
