Tea Light House in Clay
This project introduces young learners to the art of working with clay while exploring the theme of celebration. Students will create a small clay house, learning basic clay techniques such as rolling, flattening, cutting, and decorating. By using a cardboard house shape as a guide, they will practice precision and creativity to design their own unique house, developing fine motor skills and artistic expression.
Supplies
- Wood board
- Clay
- Skewer
- Two bars for guides
- Rolling pin
- Water
- Cardboard house shape
Grabbing Clay
Take out all the clay from your bag and roll it into a ball.
Flattening
Use the base of your hand (the part between your thumb and wrist) to flatten the ball.
Rolling a Slab
Put a guide on each side of your flattened ball, then use a rolling pin to roll the clay.
Making Sure It Doesn't Stick
Gently lift and move your clay slab to keep it from sticking to the board.
Marking the House Shape
Place a house mold on the clay. Use a skewer to trace the shape of the house onto the slab.
Cutting the Shape
Press harder with the skewer along the lines to cut out the house shape.
Taking Care of Extra Clay
Peel off the extra clay, roll it into a ball, and put it back in your bag.
Plan Decoration
Use the skewer to draw windows and doors on your house.
Cut Out Windows
Cut out the windows with the skewer and remove the clay pieces from inside them.
Add Details
Decorate your house by making dots, lines, and other designs with the skewer.
Prepare the Base
Get a base for your house from the materials table.
Glue the Base
Scratch lines on the back of the house and the base where they will stick together. Add a little water to glue them together.
