How to make an ambient light lamp with only $1

Gather Materials

For this project, you will need:

-Old newspapers

-Cardboard

-A string of lights

-Hot glue

You can find newspapers and cardboard in most garbage/recycling receptacles. The string of lights can be purchased for $1 at The Dollar Tree.

Assemble Cardboard Base

You may use a small found box, or put together your own out of cardboard. Leave one side (the bottom) open.

Fold Newspaper Boxes

Follow the diagram borrowed from Paul Jackson's Folding Techniques for Designers: From Sheet to Form. Vary the boxes in size, and make as many as you need to cover the base.

Cover the Base

Cover the base with the folded paper boxes. They should all be open side-down, except for those that will hold the lights. Make sure not to place the open boxes further apart than the string of lights can stretch from bulb to bulb.

Tip- assemble the boxes on each side of the base before gluing them down.

Add the Lights

Using a mat knife, cut an "X" into the center of each box with the open end facing up. Push the lights through from behind.

Plug Lamp in and Enjoy!
