The All Purpose White Board

We will be making an all-purpose white board that can hold things on your wall such as wallet, keys, etc. I am using mine to hold my speaker.

For the base of the storage compartments on the whiteboard, you will need 2 pieces of wood 12 1/2 inches in length. I started out with pieces that were about 18 inches and cut them down. Width of the wood can be a personal preference depending on what you are planning to use the storage compartments for. These 2 pieces will be used for the top and bottom of the compartment.

The next step is to prepare the sides of the compartment and the piece that will separate the compartments. For the sides, you will want to use the same thickness of wood that you used for the bases of the compartment. The height of the sides are 7 inches. To make the separator, begin by using a piece of wood that is no thicker than 1/2 an inch. Cut the piece of wood down to 12 1/2 inches. After that, you must make 2 smaller cuts to allow it to fit correctly into the compartment. I did this by putting together the pieces of the storage compartment that I had already cut and lining up the separator with the top. After that, I used a pencil to mark where the cuts should go to allow it to fit correctly.

Now that you have all your pieces of wood cut down to the correct size, it is time to put it together. Wood glue is usable to put this together but I recommend a nail gun. Start off by placing the side pieces on top of the bottom base and nailing them together. After that, its time for the separator. Place the separator exactly in the middle of the side pieces and nail it in place. After that, take the top base and place it over the top so you can nail it in place. You have now constructed the storage compartment for your all-purpose whiteboard.

The purpose of my all-purpose whiteboard was to have somewhere to put my speaker on the wall. So, on the bottom compartment, I installed some guards to keep my speaker in place inside the compartment. To do this, I simply used small pieces of wood about 1/8 inch wide and about 1/4 inch thick that were approximately the length of my speaker. I placed my speaker in the bottom compartment and lined up my guards accordingly. Then, I applied wood glue to the guards and clamped them in place so they could bond.

The final step in making your all-purpose white board is attaching the storage compartments to your white board. To attach the white board, I began by nailing a small square shaped piece of wood to the back of the top of the compartments. After that, place the whiteboard against the piece of wood on top of the compartments. Using the nail gun, nail the board to the piece of wood. The nails alone will not make the white board completely stable. To make the board more stable, use wood glue along the top part of the wood that is attached to the whiteboard. If you glue the whiteboard as well along the top of that piece of wood an the back of the backboard, it will make the whiteboard more stable.
