The Mystery of Captain Scott

Hi, I'm Samantha. I go to Hampton High School!

I wanted to make a game based on 2 classics. Clue and Battleship. So I put them together into what I like to call "The Mystery of Captain Scott" named after the teacher who helped me to build this.

Supplies

I 3D printed the the containers on the Battleship portion. The rest of it is wood that I painted by hand myself.

Fusion 360

First I made everything on Fusion and then was able to take the demetons from that and cut out the wood I would be using later on. I took some demeton references off of online based on the actual games but i changed them just a little to be able to be what I wanted.

Laser Engraving

After I had all the demetons out, I took the piece of wood I wanted and laser engraved the wood so then the pieces of the board would pop out and I could paint them.

Once I got the board at home and I was painting it, I started to work on the actual battleship board. I cut out the wood, laser engraved it, and then was able to drill all the holes out by hand in the correct place to get the board done.

So me and my teacher couldn't find a easy way to get the containers I wanted to we ended up 3 D printing them.

I got everything painted and took my final pictures, and here we are! I am so happy with how this turned out!

The Rules

So, if your wondering how to even play this, here you go:

Objective

Catch the killer with a correct accusation!

Set Up

Place your Battleship game units in the center of the board. You and your opponent will be sitting opposite of each other. Place your pegs into the containers on each side of the board. The smaller box for the red pegs and the bigger box for white pegs. And the one on the bottom is for your ships. 

Take 5 ships and secretly place them around the ocean grid. These will be Captain Scott’s fleet. Your opponent will do the same. 

For Placing your ships:

  • Vertical or horizontal. You can not place the ships diagonally.
  • Do not place a ship so that any part of it overlaps letters, numbers, the edge of the grid or another ship.
  • Once the game has begun you can not move your ships

Now take a piece for each player of their choosing color. Each color goes with a different character

Yellow-   Assistant Captain Helbing

Red-  Captain Scott

Purple- Mrs. Evolent

Green- Mr. Green

White- Ms. Snow

Blue- Mrs. Sky

All pieces will go on the board but each player will pick one that will represent them. Now take your cards and pick 3, 1 item, 1 person, and 1 place without looking so no players know what is on the cards. Place the 3 selected cards into the secret envelope and set the envelope to the side. Take the remaining cards and shuffle them all together. Take 5 cards and set them to the side of the board. These will be the “special cards”. The rest of them will be dished out to all players. You can then look at the cards you were dealt. Using these cards can knock off things on your list. Use the papers how you want but I suggest checking off all of the cards you just looked at so you don’t make a false accusation. 

How to Play

Now, the most suspicious player goes first. They will take the first shot. 

  • Calling a shot

You will pick a target and say the letter of the row that it’s in and the number of the column  it’s in. For example, A-6. The opposing player will see if your shot hit, missed, or sank one of their ships. They must tell you which it is. 

  • Hit 

If you hit one of the opponents ships, the opponent has to put a red peg where you hit their ship on the top.Your opponent will put a red peg on the ship that it hit and where on the ship. You then will pick a room on Captain Scott’s ship and then pick a person and item to suggest. *making a guess

  • Miss 

If you miss the opponent's ships, you sadly can not do anything and must wait for your next turn. You will put a white peg where 

  • Sinking a ship

If your opponent's boat gets filled with red pegs and there is no room left on it, that means you have now sunk the ship. Sinking a ship means you can make an accusation. *see making an accusation But be careful, you only have 5 accusations to get it right.  


Making a Guess

When you are in a room you will have to pick 2 other things. 1 person and 1 item. You will put that person’s game piece into the room and tell the other player your guess. For example “ I think it’s Mr. Scott with the candlestick in the boiler room”

If your opponent has any of those cards they will show you them, but they can only show one. So if they have every card that you suggested they can only pick 1 of the 3 to show you. If they don’t have any they will say “ I have none” and your turn is over and onto them. 

Making an Accusation

When you have made enough guesses and you think you know who did it, where, and with what, you can make an accusation. You will tell your opponent that you want to make one. You will then go to that room and state your accusation. For example “for my accusation I think it’s Ms. Emmett with the rope in the kitchen” *look to “to win” 

To Win

After making an accusation you will look into the folder at the 3 cards and see if you are correct. If you are, you win! If not see “if incorrect”

If Incorrect

If you open the folder and find you are incorrect you will put the cards back in and can either 

1 continue to play the game until the other player makes an accusation or 2 can end the game there and reset for a new game.
