Three Phase Transformer Design Using Ansys Maxwell

12.Final.png

A transformer is an electrical device that transfers electrical energy between two or more circuits through electromagnetic induction. A varying current in one coil of the transformer produces a varying magnetic field, which in turn induces a voltage in a second coil. Power can be transferred between the two coils through the magnetic field, without a metallic connection between the two circuits. Faraday's law of induction discovered in 1831 described this effect. Transformers are used to increase or decrease the alternating voltages in electric power applications.

ANSYS Maxwell is a Finite Element Analysis tool for electromagnetic field simulation, primarily for engineers tasked with designing and analyzing electromagnetic and electromechanical devices, including motors, actuators, transformers, sensors and coils. ANSYS Maxwell incorporates finite element method solvers to solve static, frequency-domain, and time-varying electromagnetic and electric fields.

By following the below steps, you will learn to design a 3 Phase Transformer using Ansys Maxwell.

P.S:Before starting,be familiar with the menus and toolbar in Maxwell Environment

Insert 3D Maxwell Design,Material Selection and Dimension

1.maxwell3D.png

Open Ansoft Maxwell and click insert 3D maxwell Design

Click Tool->edit configurated Libraries->Material and select steel_1008

Click modeler->Unit and change to Inch

Drawing Box

2.Core Draw.png

Click Draw Box and move mouse to plane and enter the following values(use TAB to shift to next value) X:-1,Y:-6,Z:0 & dX:2,dY:12.dZ:10,click attributes in pop up Box and change name to “core”

Creating Hole

3.Hole.png

Click Draw Box and move mouse to plane and enter the following values(use TAB to shift to next value)X:-1,Y:1,Z:2 & dX:2,dY:3.dZ:6, click attributes in pop up Box and change name to “hole”

Creating Another Hole/Duplicating Hole

4.Duplicate Hole.png

Click duplicate around axis and enter Axis as Z and Angle as 180 and click Ok

Extruding Hole / Subtracting Hole From Core

5.Subtract.png

Select Core,Hole and Hole_1 in the branch Tree and click subtract tool and check core is in blank part and hole & hole_1 in Tool part and click ok.

Core Gap/Creating E and I Core

6.core gap.png

Click Draw Box and move mouse to plane and enter the following values(use TAB to shift to next value)X:-1,Y:-6,Z:2 & dX:2,dY:12.dZ:0.05,click attributes in pop up Box and change name to “Core Gap”

Select Core and core gap in the branch Tree and click subtract tool and check core is in blank part and core gap in Tool part and click ok.

Select Core in branch Tree,Click modeler->Boolean->separate Bodies

Rename core to core_E and Core_separatly1 to Core_I

Creating Coil

7.coilA_1.png

Click Tool->edit configurated Libraries->Material and select copper

Change plane to YZ

Click rectangular and move mouse to plane and enter the following values(use TAB to shift to next value)X:0,Y:-3.6,Z:3.5, & dX:0,dY:0.3.dZ:-0.8,click attributes in pop up Box and change name to “coilA_1”

Change plane to XY

Click rectangular and move mouse to plane and enter the following values(use TAB to shift to next value)X:1.5,Y:-6.5,Z:3, & dX:-3,dY:3.dZ:0,click ok.

Click rectangle1 in branch tree and click modeler->deleted last operation.(which delete coverline under rectangle1 in branch tree)

Sweep

8.sweep.png

Select coilA_1 and rectangle1 in branchtree and click draw->sweep->along path and enter angle of twist and draft angle as 0 and draft type as 0 and click ok

Creating Terminal

9.coil terminal.png
10.delete one terminal.png

To make terminals,Select CoilA_1,Click modeler->surface->section and select YZ and click modeler->Boolean->separate bodies and delete coila_1_section1_separately and rename the terminal to TerminalA_1

Final Step

11.duplicate along the line.png
12.Final.png

Select CoilA_1 and TerminalA_1 and click duplicate along the line and enter X,Y,Z as 0 and dX,dY as 0 and dZ as 1.925 and enter total number as 3,click Ok and change the colour.

Change coilA_1_2,CoilA_1_2 to CoilA_2 and CoilA_3 and change coil colour

Select the Coils and Terminals(for B and C),click duplicate along the line and enter X,Y,Z as 0 and dX,dZ as 0 and dY as 5 and enter 3,click ok and change colour, change coil and terminal name respectively.

Thus Three Phase Transformer is designed using Ansys Maxwell.

Excitation,Boundaries and Analysis

13.Region.png

Select TerminalA and right click->assign excitation->current,base,phase as PhaseA and value as -0.5*Mag,type as stranded, click ok and enter value as 30 and click ok

Select TerminalB and right click->assign excitation->current,base,phase as PhaseB and value as Mag,type as stranded, click ok

Select TerminalC and right click->assign excitation->current,base,phase as PhaseC and value as -0.5*Mag,type as stranded, click ok

Click create region and select padding data as pad individual direction, enter 400 for X,100 for Y,150 for Z

In project manager, click analysis and click ok

In project manager, click parameter->Assign->Matrix and select all coil in post-processing,enter 30 in all phase

Click phaseA and click group and do the same for all phaseB and C
