Thrift Shop Dress Redesign ~ Patchwork Dress DIY

This is my first Instructable, I hope you will like it!

:)

You will need:

~ thrifted dress. I chose white one because it's a perfect blank slate.

~ lots of different fabrics. choosing them is a fun part! you can even use old shirts. again I found mine in the thrift store.

~ sharp scissors for fabric

~ pins and very cute pin cushion

~ tape measure thread. I've used only two colors - black and white.

~ needle

~ chalk

~ notebook&pen to make notes

~ some free time and inspiration!!

I decided to start with the skirt so the first patch I made was a beige stripe.

I took the dress and measured the longest part of the stripe and its width with my tape measure.

Then wrote down numbers so I won't forget them (and so I could come back to them when I work on the back of the dress).

After that I took beige fabric and prepared the stripe using tape measure and chalk to make marks.

And of course cut it with the scissors. I never worried about the edges because it will all be covered up later.

I've attached beige stripe to the dress using pins.

And started sewing it using absolutely basic stitches.

Since that's basically the way I've done all my patches, I'm not going to describe in details the rest of them. But I will show you the order and some tricks that I've used.

I put three stripes on the front.

I haven't had enough of white fabric, but I knew that there are going to be triangles later, so I had to repeat stripes on the back and put those triangles all the way around the white stripe so I could finally put the last beige stripe on the bottom.

That's how the base layer of the skirt was done.

After that I was finally able to put other triangles too. I love these floral ones so much!

And here you can see the way I was attaching them to the dress (both at the same time so you can see if everything is on the same level & folding edges so they are pretty straight and neat).

I was repeating all the steps on the back as well, because I knew that if I leave it behind, undone parts will start bugging me.

Next I've added these small white-blue triangles and started working on the top of the dress.

I've put black fabric and floral trapeze on the front.

And I went with black fabric and two floral triangles on the back. Though back was trickier because of the zipper.
